Our EHS interns, Mia Osimboni and Troy Tian, led important Environmental, Health, and Safety projects for our CT and RI sites. Their internships accelerated Nordson EFD’s efforts to comply with EHS regulatory requirements and improved our employees’ health and safety. Mia and Troy worked jointly to conduct a massive chemical inventory of the entire East Providence facility. This inventory project helped us to ensure compliance with the OSHA Hazard Communication standard and EPA Tier II requirements. Their efforts allowed us to update our database of Safety Data Sheets, archive obsolete chemical data, identify and correct hidden chemical safety issues, and accurately communicate chemical hazards to emergency response agencies. In addition to their joint project, Mia and Troy led individual projects. Mia helped us to minimize Nordson’s impact on storm water at our Norwich facility. This included coordinating with vendors and onsite engineers to design and install custom storm drain filters. These filter systems capture plastic particles that generate from resin silo deliveries and waste handling areas before those particles enter waterways. Mia also led efforts to further improve safe food operations in our East Providence kitchen and cafeteria. This included working with consultants, facilities management, and kitchen personnel to coordinate voluntary inspections, staff training and certification, and state licensure documentation. Troy helped to address high-noise equipment at our Norwich facility. He worked with consultants and onsite engineers to collect noise data, document machine functions, and obtain engineered noise reduction solutions. Once implemented, these solutions will greatly reduce the noise our Norwich employees are exposed to, thus eliminating the need for some employees to wear hearing protection. Troy also led efforts to improve ventilation in our East Providence solder department. Troy coordinated with vendors, facilities management, and solder department personnel to complete a combustible dust hazard analysis at a third party laboratory and select and purchase a downdraft table that will greatly improve the air quality of our solder department when resin material is hammered. Cole has been extremely helpful here in the EMA department. He has had the opportunity to work hands-on with the equipment with soldering, test stations, and calibration stations. He has been able to spend time with the engineers in the Engineering Lab, seeing what they do down there, and have a better understanding of our products and how we troubleshoot different issues. He has attended several meetings to have an understanding of the why’s and to be able to understand how it all comes together, daily VDM and Safety. Mario Garcia worked as an intern in the Inventory Department in RI. He maintained inventory storage locations and worked with internal departments on incoming products to ensure timely processing, helping us meet our LLP OTD goal.
