At Normal Software, we’re always listening to our users' needs, and we're excited to announce a long-requested feature in Normal Framework! You can now “pin” points in the Object Explorer—allowing you to easily manage and monitor key data. With this new capability, you can: 📊 View recent time-series data for pinned points ✍️ Read and write directly to those points 🔍 Access the full set of metadata for each point This update makes it simpler to keep track of critical data and streamline your workflows. We're proud to continually improve the tools you rely on! #normalsoftware #smartbuildings #buildingautomation #facilitymanagement #dataintegration #digitalbuildings
About us
We specialize in building controls, data management, and applications for IoT (Internet of Things) analytics - providing open, transparent, and portable solutions for controlling and analyzing IoT devices. Our biggest offering currently is the cutting-edge Normal Framework (NF), a software framework designed for IoT application developers - particularly those involving building systems. It offers a comprehensive solution for efficiently managing, integrating, and normalizing IoT data, with flexibility, scalability, and developer-friendly features as its key advantages. We are striving to create a world where IoT analytics and controls are open, portable, and sharable. This task of ours is a big one, as we want to make every building a connected building - with a goal of at least 100,000 buildings connected with our framework - to simplify the lives of our clients within the building infrastructure space.

We get a lot of questions and concerns about independent data layers (IDLs)! Below are the most common ones with some responses from our team on why IDLs will be an essential part of progressing the smart building industry and why our Normal Framework (NF) is an ideal solution. --- But first, what is an IDL? In its ideal form, it creates a unified, flexible platform for integrating data across a building portfolio containing various building systems, regardless of vendor. IDLs help portfolio managers: - Remove data silos and gain deeper insights - Prioritize meaningful, portfolio-wide improvements - Reduce reliance on proprietary systems - Deploy new technologies smoothly and cost-effectively - Hold vendors accountable for delivering contracted services 🔌 Think of an IDL as a "power chord" for data that can connect to any "appliance." --- Here are the top questions and concerns we field on IDLs: 💵 COST - Hardware, software, and integration costs can be a financial barrier, and many building owners have concerns about immediate ROI, especially if existing systems are operational. Response - IDLs should be like NF, with a minimal, one-time cost and the ability to use it perpetually. We believe people should own their data like their buildings! 💻 INTEGRATION COMPLEXITY - Building systems across large portfolios are often complex and fragmented, and stakeholders wonder if deployment will disrupt operations. Response - Basic IDLs should be able to be deployed in an afternoon, connecting to existing systems to pull data without disrupting processes. More complex integrations can then be added as use cases arise. 🏙 DUPLICATION OF EXISTING FUNCTIONALITY - Owners wonder if their existing investments in building automation technologies are sufficient to deliver similar outcomes. Response - IDLs make sense for a diverse, multi-vendor portfolios; allowing access to data from any asset without an expensive and ongoing effort to standardize on a single vendor for base building controls. 🤝 VENDOR LOCK-IN - Some portfolios have existing contracts with proprietary vendors and an IDL may challenge these relationships, potentially leading to resistance or additional fees from vendors. Response - An IDL should live within an owner's owned IT infrastructure, and utilize service providers to implement and maintain it. They should be free to switch providers if they are unhappy with the service, and open APIs and data access should make it feasible to swap out IDL components as needed. 🔒 SECURITY + DATA PRIVACY - IDLs may raise questions about vulnerabilities, access control, and regulatory compliance around sensitive information. Response - By running an IDL inside a portfolio's infrastructure, owners can leverage and implement the policies, plans, and procedures already in place to secure those assets. --- Want to learn more? Today at NexusCon, Stephen Dawson-Haggerty will be demonstrating what deploying an ASHRAE Guideline 36-based digital upgrade for an air handler looks like. This will integrate use of a data model / ontology, advanced programming environment, and integration with GitHub. If you're at NexusCon 2024, stop by the demo stage at 11:45 AM to learn more! Thanks for sharing this James Dice! It was fun helping create the data platform that KIPP DC was looking for to implement an effective IDL for their campus. #normalsoftware #data #dataplatform #IDL #smartbuildings #facilitymanagement #buildingportfolio #k12
With #BacktoSchool season in mind, it seemed like the perfect time to share one of our Nexus Labs partner’s recent deployments — Normal Software X KIPP DC PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOLS! Working with Intellimation, LLC, Normal delivered a robust data platform for an IDL (Independent Data Layer) that gave new freedom to building owners. With an IDL in place KIPP was able to test out different applications and see their impact, allowing them to make much better decisions on software that actually drives value in more 120 DC-area schools. Check out more about this deployment on our #Deployments page! https://lnkd.in/gVAwSY-S
