As the weather gets colder, can gas heat pumps still operate in cold temperatures? GHP manufacturers have data to support that gas heat pumps can perform at efficiency of >100% and as low as -20 degrees Celsius/-4 degrees Fahrenheit. Different gas heat pump manufacturers' specification sheets mention an ambient operating temperature of -40 to +54 degrees Celsius/ -40 to 129 degrees Fahrenheit. So, you can still stay warm at home without back-up! #gasheatpumps #gasefficiency #energyefficiency Citations: https://lnkd.in/dSjPBy2X, https://lnkd.in/gEMyJ9zG

Accelerating the adoption of gas heat pumps to support decarbonization in the U.S. and Canada
About us
The North American Gas Heat Collaborative represents over 37% of residential customers in the U.S. and Canada. The Collaborative, which is made up of 16 natural gas and dual fuel utilities and energy efficiency program administrators, recognizes gas heat pump technologies play an important role in decarbonization. The Collaborative is focused on providing diverse solutions to equitably decarbonize with considerations for local and regional policies, climate, customer affordability, existing infrastructure, and grid composition to maximize carbon emissions reductions. The Collaborative’s mission is to accelerate the adoption of innovative technologies that advance energy efficiency and facilitate the decarbonization of North America’s gas network through market transformation initiatives. We are working to accelerate the commercialization of gas heat pump (GHP) technology which exceeds efficiencies of 100%.

Did you know that gas heat pumps have the ability to run on hydrogen-gas blends? But what is hydrogen and how does it help decrease GHG emissions? Hydrogen is a clean fuel that, when consumed in a fuel cell, produces only water without GHG emissions. Hydrogen can be produced from a variety of domestic resources, such as natural gas, nuclear power, biomass, and renewable power like solar and wind. Commercial gas heat pumps have been around for over 10 years! While residential gas heat pumps are newer to the market, commercial GHPs have been used in a variety of applications like multi-family buildings, hospitals, schools and more. Many manufacturers have products available in the U.S. and Canada, with more to come next year! #heatpumps #gasheatpumps #gasefficiency #cleanenergy #energyefficiency

Commercial gas heat pump (GHP) pilot data is available! FortisBC installed four GHPs in a long-term care facility in Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Canada. With M&V data collected from May to August 2024, the Cooling Gas Utilization Efficiency (GUE) is 156%, Domestic Hot Water Heat Recovery is 138% and the combined GUE is 294%. Image: The chart below is from one of the pilot sites where the GHPs consistently operate to provide supplementary cooling in the first week of September 2024 and it shows the cooling GUE and Combined (cooling with DHW heat recovery) GUE during this period. #FortisBC #gasheatpumps #gasefficiency #energyefficiency

Residential gas heat pumps are new to the U.S and Canada, so how do they work? Most residential products use gas absorption technology, which works through the evaporation and absorption of liquids to transfer heat from outside to inside. This allows gas absorption heat pumps to achieve efficiencies of over 100%. The units currently on the market typically use non-global warming potential refrigerants like ammonia. Read more about the process in detail on page 12 here: https://lnkd.in/gQTRAQ-4

You’ve been hearing all about #heatpumps, but what are they? For heating, heat pumps work by capturing heat from the outdoor ambient air and transferring it indoors for space and water heating. By transferring heat, a heat pump creates more than one unit of heat for every unit of energy it uses, making them more than 100% efficient. Gas heat pumps operate the same way, but use natural gas to fuel the refrigerant cycle, which is the mechanism that transfers the heat. #heatpumps #gasheatpumps #gasefficiency #energyefficiency

How are #gasheatpumps and dual fuel products different? "Dual fuel" typically indicates the pairing of two different technologies for heating and cooling- as you can see in the images below. This frequently can mean an electric heat pump for cooling and a standard furnace for heating, but there may be combined units as well. GHPs are not dual fuel systems, because they only use a gas heat pump for both heating and cooling. While current residential GHP products are heating only, commercial GHPs are available to both heat and cool! #gasheatpumps #gasefficiency #energyefficiency
