About us
The Department of Financial Institutions traces it’s lineage to the North Dakota legislature’s creation of a State Examiner in 1893. Through the Bank and Credit Union divisions, the Department has charge of the execution of all laws relating to state-chartered banks, trust companies, and credit unions. The Department’s Consumer Division regulates money brokers, mortgage loan originators, deferred presentment service providers (payday lenders), collection agencies, debt settlement service providers, and money transmitters. Our mission is to maintain public confidence in North Dakota financial institutions by ensuring the financial industry operates in a safe and sound manner while complying with applicable rules and laws. Our vision is a safe, secure and competitive financial services environment, which promotes the economic well-being of North Dakota businesses and consumers. The Department is a special-fund Agency which is self-funded by the entities we regulate and committed to maintaining a standard of excellence in meeting its regulatory responsibilities. The Banking Division of the Department was accredited by the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) in 1993 and re-accredited in 1998, 2003, 2008, and 2013. The Credit Union Division was accredited by the National Association of State Credit Union Supervisors (NASCUS) in 2000 and re-accredited in 2006 and 2010. The Banking Division consists of a Chief Examiner and 16 field examiners located in Bismarck, Fargo, and Grand Forks. The Credit Union Division consists of a Chief Examiner and two field examiners located in Bismarck. The Consumer Division consists of four examiners/investigators located in Bismarck. Megan and Brad attended the annual AARMR Conference and Training in New Orleans last week, which is a mortgage lending and servicing training conference. They were able to talk to other state regulators about servicing and ways to collaborate in the future. This photo was taken during the Meet the Regulators event put on for industry.

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. It is important to know the signs of elder abuse, as well as report it when you have reason for concern. Because only 1 in 24 cases of elder abuse is reported, many older adults are not receiving the protection they deserve. Let's stand together to support and protect the older adults in our lives! We are grateful for all that the National Center on Elder Abuse does to create awareness around this important issue.
