  • 👏🎉Big thanks to all who attended NEWT presentations at the 2024 Land Trust Alliance Rally this past week. Special shoutout to the NEWT staff and board members that presented. ⭐️A couple highlights: 🤝In partnership with Greg Abernathy of Kentucky Natural Lands Trust and Jay Tutchton of Southern Plains Land Trust, NEWT staff members presented on wildlands conservation across the US. Highlighting the important rewilding work at the center of each of these organizations, these experts presented the tools and practices that are integral to the land protection process. 💡Muddy Pond Field Trip! Folks from around the country joined NEWT at nearby Muddy Pond Wilderness Preserve to explore the ecosystem and learn the history of this remarkable preserve. 🍂Untrammeled: The Case for Wild Places in a Changing World, a panel that featured Mark Anderson, NEWT board emeritus and Director of Conservation Science at The Nature Conservancy, alongside Susie O'Keeffe, NEWT board Vice President, and Ramona Peters, founder of Native Land Conservancy, Inc. 📸: Photography by ecologist and NEWT board member Liz Thompson. #Landconservation #rewilding #foreverwild #LTARally

  • NEWT says hello from the 2024 Land Trust Alliance Rally in Providence, RI this past weekend! Our staff were delighted to champion wilderness conservation while connecting with other land trusts from across the country. Last week several members of the NEWT stewardship team led a field trip to our nearby Muddy Pond Wilderness Preserve, where participants hiked the trails at the Preserve and learned about this slice of the Atlantic Coastal Pine Barrens ecosystem, which is now rewilding thanks to NEWT protection. 📸: Photos by Stewardship Director Hannah Epstein. #LTARally #FieldTrip #Landprotection #Rewilding #Pinebarrens #foreverwild #Ontheland

As we continue to recognize the importance of Greenpeace Day, we are thrilled to spotlight some of our employees who recently volunteered with the Northeast Wilderness Trust. 🌲     They journeyed to Montpelier, VT, where they contributed to local wildlife conservation by helping clean a portion of Bear’s Nest Wilderness Preserve. 🐻     Their dedication to nature and conservation is truly commendable. For us, Greenpeace Day represents an ongoing commitment to these important goals. 🌎 #TogetherWeHaveThePowerToWin

Land Trust Alliance Rally Field Trip to Muddy Pond Wilderness Preserve. We learned about this globally-rare ecosystem and the unique plant life. The land stewards of North East Wilderness Trust shared the history of preservation here, relationships with the community, and challenges to protect this special place into the future. We also stopped at Mayflower Brewing Company for a tasty beverage afterwards. Thank you to Joe, Hannah and crew for sharing your passion for this "future old growth forest". #rally4land Land Trust Alliance Leelanau Conservancy Northeast Wilderness Trust

  • We were thrilled to welcome to Vermont last week an adventurous team of volunteers from Church & Dwight Co., Inc. Philanthropic Foundation! They joined us for field days at Woodbury Mountain Wilderness Preserve and Bear's Nest Wilderness Preserve. Both of these Preserves were made possible by the generous support of the Foundation. At Woodbury Mountain, renowned ecologist and NEWT board member Brett Engstrom led the volunteers on an ecology-themed walk through the Preserve. At Bear's Nest, the volunteers got a hands-on lesson in rewilding by helping NEWT staff remove the vestiges of a sugaring operation, including the dilapidated remnants of a sugar shack and many, many yards of tubing. Thank you to the Church & Dwight team for your commitment to wilderness and for being incredible partners in our work. #rewilding #vermont #conservation

  • 🔔🎉 Rewilding update from NEWT's Moriah Wilderness Preserve in New York. These photos, captured by New York Land Steward Janelle Jones from November 2023 ➡️ May 2024, document the removal of a dilapidated camp on the Preserve. Though NEWT practices a hands-off management strategy, the occasional removal of old manmade structures supports the natural rewilding process. On its other Preserves, NEWT has also removed culverts, decommissioned roads, and closed motorized-vehicle trails. These measures help to control erosion, reduce vehicle trespass in sensitive habitats such as vernal pools and wetlands, and restore aquatic connectivity. #untrammeled #rewilding #northeast #landconservation #newyork #champlainvalley #landprotection

🌳✏️ Class is in session with NEWT's Wildlands Ecology Director! On September 7 and 8, our ecologist Shelby Perry co-led a class on old-forest ecology at North Branch Nature Center in Montpelier, VT. Perry and her co-teacher Bob Zaino of the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department began the course with a classroom session on the basics of old-growth forests, their key characteristics, and their importance to wildlife and the climate. Perry and Zaino then brought students into the most appropriate place to hammer these lessons home: the woods! The group hiked to a patch of forest in North Branch Park, where they practiced their newly learned landscape reading skills. Students noticed an abundance of coarse woody debris, varied canopy gaps, and a general sense of "seeming disarray," all telltale signs of old forests. They ended the day back in the classroom before setting off for another conserved forest the following morning. Photo Credit: Shelby Perry #oldforests #rewilding #outdooreducation

On behalf of the Church & Dwight Co., Inc. Philanthropic Foundation, huge thanks to Nicie Panetta and Cathleen Maine at Northeast Wilderness Trust for welcoming our group to Montpelier, VT to get out in nature and help clean up a [tiny!] portion of Bear's Nest Wilderness Preserve. This expansive property is critical as a wildlife migration corridor and home to old forest. Thank you also to my colleagues who volunteered their time and energy to help bring the partnership between NEWT and our CHD Foundation to life.

  • 9 million ➡️ 111 million... That's the number of acres originally vs. currently protected via the National Wilderness Preservation System, which was created 60 years ago this month upon the passage of the 1964 Wilderness Act. On these lands, Nature calls the shots. Wildlife are free to roam, raise their young, and simply exist as they are. Forests have a chance to grow old, capturing carbon naturally. This wild legacy remains an enduring source of inspiration for us here at NEWT. It motivates our work every day to protect more wilderness in the Northeast, one acre at a time. #NationalWildernessMonth 📸: Grasse River Wilderness Preserve, photography by Brendan Wiltse. #wildernessact #rewilding #conservation
