We're the first health system in Long Island—and the only one currently in New York State—to use augmented reality (AR) for hip replacement surgeries. Dr. Keith Reinhardt, chief of joint reconstruction at South Shore University Hospital, was the first to use HipInsight, a mixed-reality technology that employs 3D holograms on patients undergoing hip replacement. Like Henri Rivers, an avid skier and ski coach who found himself sidelined by hip pain last season. Now, with help from Dr. Reinhardt and an AR-guided hip replacement surgery, he'll be ready to ski by Thanksgiving. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3Z2PCNk

Have you heard? Northwell has partnered with Farmingdale State College to expand the Northwell Community Scholars Program to its students. “We believe education is a key social determinant of health,” said Debbie Salas-Lopez, MD, MPH, FACP, senior vice president of the Office of Community Wellness and Population Health at Northwell Health. “It’s a gateway to not only health and wellness but to employment opportunities and financial success.” The program focuses on health and social inequities impacting hundreds of students across select high schools in Long Island, Queens and Manhattan, with plans to expand to Westchester County in 2025.

In a first of its kind, our multidisciplinary cardiac team at Long Island Jewish Medical Center successfully implanted a leadless pacemaker and performed an atrial tachycardia ablation in an adult congenital heart patient with a double inlet left ventricle. 🫀💪 This is a congenital heart defect in which a patient only has one working pumping chamber in their heart. Just another example of our Northwell Cardiovascular Institute being ahead of the curve when it comes to providing our patients with the best heart care.

In a first of its kind, our team at Long Island Jewish Medical Center successfully implanted a leadless pacemaker and performed an atrial tachycardia ablation in an adult congenital heart patient with a double inlet left ventricle (a congenital heart defect in which a patient only has one working pumping chamber in their heart). “This really highlights the reach of Northwell Cardiology and the impressive collaboration to treat a complex congenital patient,” said Dr. Haisam Ismail, director of adult electrophysiology at LIJ. The case involved experts from different disciplines of cardiology, including Catherine Weinberg, MD, MBA, director of adult congenital; Konstantin Averin, MD, MS, FSCAI (director) and Dr. Dipak Kholwadwala from Pediatric Interventional; Dr. Andrew Blaufox, associate chief of pediatric cardiology; and Dr. Larry Epstein, system chief of adult electrophysiology.

In the new field of #bioelectronicmedicine, vagus nerve stimulation is transforming how we treat diseases—replacing traditional medications with cutting-edge technology. For Dr. Kevin Tracey, president and CEO of The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, this research began thirty years ago when he made a pledge to one young patient—the commitment to understand the molecular mechanisms behind disease, and to find a way to intervene. So, how did we get here, and what comes next? Here's a look at the history of the key steps toward a revolutionary rethinking of health and disease—and a glimpse at the future of medicine: https://bit.ly/3XaqByb
