Celebrating 50 Years of preserving water resources in Northwest Florida
About us
One of five water management districts created by the Water Resources Act of 1972, the Northwest Florida Water Management District is charged with managing the water resources of the Florida panhandle. The District works to protect and manage the water resources in a sustainable manner that benefits both the people and natural resources across its 16-county region. The District focuses on its core missions of water supply, water quality, flood protection and natural resource protection through a variety of activities, including water quality and quantity monitoring, research and planning, regulatory activities and permitting, and land acquisition and management.

🌟RETIREMENT🌟 Yesterday, we celebrated Paul Thorpe’s career with a retirement recognition at our monthly Governing Board meeting. Paul joined the District in August of 1994 as an Assistant Water Resource Planner in the Division of Resource Management. Throughout his tenure, he has been subsequently promoted, becoming a Bureau Chief in 2014, Deputy Division Director in 2020, and finally Division Director in 2023. In his 30 years at the District, Paul has become our in-house expert on all aspects of water resource management, watershed and water supply planning, and grant program development and implementation. He can recall the details and history of projects, water resource issues, funding, partnerships, and District staff dating back three decades. Paul’s extensive water resource knowledge and his attention to detail are unparalleled and certainly irreplaceable. As a leader, Paul is effective, dedicated, and thoughtful; he is well-liked by all, and his collaborative nature has contributed to many successful partnerships between the District, other state and federal agencies, and local communities. Paul is kind and genuinely cares about the individuals on his team, always having an open door to discuss work and personal topics alike. He has a great sense of humor, and his quick-witted quips will be missed. The entire District is grateful for his 30 years of service to the and the communities and people of northwest Florida. He is going to be greatly missed and we wish him the best upon retirement!👏🏻
