While leaders can't foresee every unexpected, unfortunate, or even tragic event that will touch our communities, we can proactively take commonsense steps to be prepared. For crisis communications specifically, a recent Forbes article provides this advice: * Be Prepared: Anticipate crises and have a plan in place. * Stay Calm: Maintain composure and clarity in communication. * Listen and Respond: Address internal and external concerns promptly to avoid misinformation spreading or rumors taking over. * Learn and Adapt: Continuously evaluate and improve your crisis response through preparation and experience.

Advancing women from a variety of local government backgrounds into the role of a city manager or administrator.
About us
The International City/County Management Association (ICMA) convened a Task Force on Women in the Profession in 2012 to evaluate whether the number of women ascending to the top executive positions had increased since 1976, when the first Task Force on Women in the Profession had convened. In 2014, the ICMA membership reported that approximately 14.4% of Chief Administrative Officers are women. To address the underrepresentation of women in leadership roles, the Washington City/County Management Association (WCMA) established the Northwest Women's Leadership Academy. The Academy helps to prepare and promote more women from diverse backgrounds who are interested in serving as City Managers/Administrators. Other objectives for the Academy include providing opportunities to: • Enhance skills, competencies and build confidence; • Expand professional connections and support networks; and • Connect participants with resources to grow in their career The Academy is a nine-month program meeting for six full-day (Friday) sessions about every other month, with the following focus areas: • Leadership and ethics • Governance structure • Communication strategies and nurturing trust • Strategic planning • Finance and budgeting • Labor relations and negotiations • Life work balance, confidence, and self-awareness • Interviewing, resume prep, and working with recruiters The classes are taught by academics, professional trainers, and local government practitioners and are held at various locations around the Puget Sound region. Potential participants must compete for a limited number of spots (approximately 32). The application process begins in June and the next class of participants are announced in August. The Academy starts in September and is completed by June. The cost of participation is $750 and scholarships are available for applicants whose agencies are unable to cover the cost. Home stays are also available to defray costs.

It is hardly a gender-swapped 1950s revival. But the trend reflects an underappreciated effect of the rise of working-from-home

They're not just conversations – they're crossroads where your city's future can shift based on how effectively you communicate. This week, I'm sharing practical insights from the book, “Crucial Conversations,” specifically tailored for municipal leaders like you. We can and must transform our democracy and economy in service of our collective flourishing, toward a country that works for all. So regardless of what happens in this election, we must stay steady and steely in our resolve. We must adopt a transformative leadership stance that each of us are founders of the multiracial democracy that has yet to be born. #WeAreTheFounders
