INTRODUCING: Trienens Institute Six Pillars of Decarbonization - Capture The Trienens Institute Six Pillars of Decarbonization leverage Northwestern strengths to accelerate the transition to a clean energy future. The Capture Pillar aims to create technologies and processes to remove carbon dioxide from industrial emissions and the air. Partnerships with industry are essential to translating the new technologies into practice. Led by faculty co-chairs Omar Farha and Randy Snurr, the pillar brings together expert faculty from across Northwestern University and collaborators to develop solutions and innovative approaches. Read the latest collaborative research from the Milan Mrksich's Group and University of Chicago Department of Chemistry! Recently published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, this groundbreaking study uses computational strategies to design #megamolecules for self-assembling lattice networks. Researchers engineered megamolecules by attaching Cutinase-SnapTag fusions to terpyridine-functionalized linkers, enabling controlled self-assembly. Through advanced molecular dynamics simulations, they identified the ideal peptide linker, (EAAAK)₂, optimizing for efficient assembly while significantly reducing experimental time. The results, validated through experiments, offer a new approach to designing large #biomolecular materials, paving the way for broader applications in biomolecular engineering. And the winners of the #NanoInFocus contest are … James Utama Surjadi (first place) for “Three-Dimensional Nanoarchitected Hexagonal Boron Nitride,” Caleb DeWitt (second place) for “Micro-Broccoli,” and Matthew Hershey (third place) for “Landscape of Nanospheres.” Check out these images at: https://lnkd.in/e5zJXbux. The NanoInFocus image contest was an opportunity for people to explore the beauty of the #nanoscale and learn the value of working at fundamental length scales. It was organized by the National Nanotechnology Coordination Office, on behalf of the National Nanotechnology Initiative, along with the National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded UC San Diego Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (UCSD MRSEC), and the American Chemical Society.

Huge congratulations to Matthew Hershey, a Northwestern student in the Dayne Swearer Lab, Northwestern University Department of Chemistry, International Institute for Nanotechnology at Northwestern University Fellow, and NUANCE Center & SHyNE Resource user for winning 3rd place in the NanoInFocus Image Contest. The contest was organized by the National Nanotechnology Coordination Office (NNCO), on behalf of the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI), along with the NSF-funded UC San Diego Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (UCSD MRSEC), and the American Chemical Society (ACS). His image, “Uprising of the Spheres,” originally earned Honorable Mention in NUANCE’s annual “Art of Science” contest, which features work created using NUANCE facility instruments. The image, captured on the JEOL 7900, then went on to secure 3rd place in the national competition held by the NNCO and partners. Matt explains the significance of his image: "As we face the growing climate crisis, renewable energy technologies are essential. Nanoparticles like titanium dioxide, when reduced to 300-500 nanometers, can harness visible light from the sun to drive chemical reactions critical for sustainability. Imaging these nanoparticles with SEM, as shown here, is crucial for optimizing their size and shape for effective use." We're proud to see Matt's work recognized on the national stage!
