Have you seen this gilded mural before? ✨ This site-specific mural, called "Lucent Garden," was created by British artist Paul Morrison in the Norton's Jane and Leonard Korman Room. Running more than 100 inches up to the ceiling, this gold leaf and acrylic creation always stuns visitors. Take 🔍 A Closer Look 🔍 at "Lucent Garden" on October 9. This in-person program, led by Glenn Tomlinson, William Randolph Hearst Chief Officer of Learning and Community Engagement, will explore the glittering mural. Can't make it on Wednesday? Only three more weeks until we open "Strike Fast, Dance Lightly: Artists on Boxing" 🥊💥 Sure to knock you out, this powerful exhibition looks at the sport of boxing through different types of artistic media. Featuring over 100 artworks spanning from the late 19th century to present day, this dynamic presentation is the largest comprehensive survey of artwork depicting the global sport and its cultural impact. "I think one of Kiefer's other key investigations is this eternal battle between civilization and nature." Anselm Kiefer created this work, "Jesaia: Ober euren Stadten wird Gras wachsen (Isaiah: Grass Will Grow Over Your Cities)," in 1999. This incredible instance of collage is a part of our Collection, and is currently on view in "Cut Up/Cut Out: Photomontage and Collage." Due to the delicate nature of this work, we can only display one spread of the book at a time. Take a behind the scenes look at the other spreads in the Closer Look video on our YouTube channel. You'll hear from Lauren Richman, Ph.D., William and Sarah Ross Soter Curator of Photography, and see up close how the pages of this book are overlaid with sand, ash, and grit. If you haven't heard already, this event is the perfect way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, with fun activities from 11 am to 4 pm and free Museum Admission and parking for all.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage with us this weekend at our Nuestra Cultura Community Day this Saturday! This ✨ FREE ✨ event features activities for all ages, each celebrating the rich, diverse cultures from across South America, Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean, and our own communities. There will be art-making workshops, performances, special tours focusing on Hispanic artists, an artist talk, a dance class, and more! Local students will discuss Latinx pioneers that have influenced them, and other students will perform a medley of Mexican folk tunes. There will even be a Piñata Party that your little ones will love! Featured performers include Kautía Taíno Araguako’ono (Florida Taíno Dancers), Miami Tango and Tango Bardo Orchestra, Pedro Vilanova and Tamboricua Miami, and more. This will definitely be a fun event, so we hope to see you there! As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we wanted to spotlight a few Hispanic artists on view from our Collection! Next up: Pablo Picasso. Picasso needs little introduction, but we'll give you one anyway. The Spanish artist is considered one of the founders of Cubism, and this, along with his prolific output of artwork, has made him one of the most famous artists in history. We're lucky enough to have multiple works by Picasso in our Collection, like "The Red Foulard." This oil on canvas primarily depicts a red scarf (the foulard), a mandolin, and a bowl of fruit. It's painted with the shifted perspective that was already an iconic element of Cubism at the time of this work's creation in 1924. Picasso revolutionized the art world with his approach to new styles of creation. His fearless artistic exploration invited future creators to break boundaries and experiment with their own artistic voices. Join us for a Curator Conversation on "Cut Up/Cut Out: Photomontage and Collage" this Friday! 📸 This exhibition explores the power of these composite artworks to create diverse interpretative possibilities. As artists cut up, cut out, and combine images from disparate sources, they create new meaning in their work. William and Sarah Ross Soter Curator of Photography, Lauren Richman, Ph.D., will discuss this exhibition and these photographic techniques. It's sure to be a lively discussion, so we hope to see you there! We're taking you behind the scenes to the installation of our building banner, which promotes two of our upcoming special exhibitions. "Strike Fast, Dance Lightly: Artists on Boxing" opens on October 26. This show looks at the sport of boxing through a variety of artistic media. It's the largest comprehensive survey of artwork depicting the global sport and its cultural impact. Unpacking the many nuanced and intimate moments surrounding the fight, this show is sure to knock you out. 🥊💥 Next up, we have "Sorolla and the Sea," opening on November 23. This exhibition will explore the work and life of beloved Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida. Sorolla’s work impressively balances the Spanish tradition of Realism with the Modernist trends of the 20th century. This show will immerse you in the romance and realism of early 20th-century seaside Spain. 🌊✨ We'll see you at the Norton this fall!
