Hey LinkedIn fam, Yesterday, I had the honor of successfully hosting my first NSBE Jr. event as the Pre-Collegiate Initiative (PCI) Chair for NSBE - Michigan State University. As PCI Chair, my goal is to focus NSBE’s efforts on promoting college, academics, technology, and leadership to pre-college students. Our primary objective is to engage students in grades K-12 to develop an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). This year, we successfully established a NSBE Jr. chapter at Windemere Park Charter Academy—this is the third NSBE Jr. chapter in the entire state! We recently hosted our first event, which was the NSBE Jr. STEM Exploration. Being in a role that hasn’t been filled in many years is a lot, but I am proud of the effort I put in to bring it back to life and make a difference for the students that we are working hard to support. Seeing the kids so engaged and involved in the activities we had truly warmed my heart. There are many more exciting things to come with this NSBE Jr. chapter, and we have more great meetings planned for the kids! 🙌🏾 Lastly huge shoutout to my volunteers, Laila Jackson, Christopher Rogers, Malaika Waithaka, and Kristina Boyd . #NSBEJr #REGION IV #STEM #NSBEMSU

The official LinkedIn page of region IV, the mother region, of the National Society of Black Engineers.

This past weekend, we had the pleasure of hosting our Regional Leadership Conference (RLC) at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. It was a truly enriching experience, as we connected with student leaders from across the region. The event featured a DEI panel, a mental health workshop, a networking workshop, and several role-specific workshops designed to equip our leaders with the tools they need to succeed. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who attended, especially Madam Chair Taylor Scott, Keisha Smith-Jones, Dr. Barbara Dunlap, Peter Oduwole, Dr. Tamiika Hurst- Darby, Monica Jones, James Jackson, Dr. Bryanna Stigger and all of our exceptional volunteers. Your time, expertise, and generous contributions made this event a tremendous success! #R4RLC #RegionIVfolife

I'm excited to share that I recently finished my incredible internship at Johnson & Johnson as a Visual Engagement Intern, working with the Visual Engagement team. This experience was not just about gaining new skills but also about being part of a space that encouraged conversation, teamwork, and a sense of community, which made my internship both enjoyable and highly productive. During my time at J&J, I had the unique opportunity to work on several key projects that enhanced the digital experience within our technology office. I worked on digital signage technology, analyzed visitor data, assisted in strategy development for the Content Management System, and created content for our interactive display. These projects allowed me to develop my expertise in tools like Power BI, Figma, Appspace, Photoshop, and Excel, all of which were crucial in driving our initiatives forward and helping our End-User Services team. A highlight of my internship was the chance to attend an African Ancestry Leadership Conference. This experience was truly inspiring as I had the opportunity to see and connect with people like me within J&J, which reinforced the importance of representation and diversity within the company. Additionally, I had the privilege of collaborating with a group of interns to organize a food drive for our building, showcasing our commitment to the community. We successfully collected 157 donations, which were donated to the Food Bank Network of Somerset County, NJ. In the final weeks of my internship, I prepared for and successfully passed the Professional Scrum Master I Exam from Scrum.org, further solidifying my understanding of agile methodologies. I am incredibly grateful to my manager, Richard Gomez, and my mentor Rashona Yang for their guidance and support throughout the summer. I also want to extend a thank you to the entire End-Users Team and to the intern and co-op friends I made along the way. Overall, I’m deeply thankful to Johnson & Johnson for providing such an informative, engaging, and truly enjoyable experience!

Last Friday, I completed an incredible 14-week internship at Nissan Motor Corporation, where I had the opportunity to work as a Safety Performance Engineer in Farmington Hills, MI. This experience introduced me to the fascinating world of automotive safety, allowing me to manage and conduct full vehicle tests and analyze post-test data using new software tools like DIAdem and Space Vertex. During my time at Nissan, I had the chance to expand my technical skills by: - Supporting component and full vehicle development testing operations for the Nissan Frontier. - Collaborating with safety advancement lab technicians to gather and analyze data post-testing. - Utilizing innovative software programs to process and analyze data, conduct video analysis and model 3D structures digitally. I also want to highlight some key moments where I expanded my career network by: - Cultivating valuable connections with colleagues and industry leaders through the Executive Speaker Series and various events, including a memorable opportunity to meet SVP Chris Reed and join one of his iconic selfies. -Engaging in professional development with my Nissan colleagues at the SWE Girls’ Engineering Exploration event where I helped inspire 4th to 8th-grade girls by connecting them with female engineers and showcasing exciting career opportunities. I am deeply thankful for all the support I received this summer. A big shoutout to our HR reps, DeAntae Todd and Nikola Radisic and my fantastic Safety Performance team. I am especially grateful to my mentors, Paige Schomer(Byers) and Amanda Bukhtia for their guidance, patience, and encouragement. Their insights helped me sharpen my critical thinking skills and gave me the confidence to tackle complex, cross-functional projects. As I approach the final stretch of my undergraduate journey, I’m excited to apply what I’ve learned to my future career in engineering. Thank you, Nissan, for an unforgettable experience!

Some people don’t need to go that far to find greatness, and Dauan Hendley Jr., a lifelong Detroiter, found that true when he decided to study at Michigan State University College of Engineering. There, he participated in the Engineering Society of Detroit, the Michigander Scholars Program, and even became the National Society of Black Engineers treasurer. While post-college planning can be difficult, Dauan found that Michigan was the right place to start in the automotive field and that his academics prepared him to begin his career, landing a job at Nissan Motor Corporation as a Battery Development Engineer. Beyond the job, Dauan wanted to live in a place with diversity, opportunity, and community. Michigan has all that. While Dauan said he’d go almost anywhere for the right job, he didn’t have to go very far to find what he was looking for. #YouCanInMichigan
