About us
Through its student survey, The College Student Report, NSSE annually collects information at hundreds of four-year colleges and universities about first-year and senior students' participation in programs and activities that institutions provide for their learning and personal development. The results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college. NSSE also provides Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE) and Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE) to collect data from institutional faculty and new students, respectively. NSSE provides participating institutions a variety of reports that compare their students' responses with those of students at self-selected groups of comparison institutions. Comparisons are available for ten Engagement Indicators, six High-Impact Practices, and all individual survey questions. Each November, NSSE also publishes its Annual Results, which reports topical research and trends in student engagement results. NSSE researchers also present and publish research findings throughout the year. Bachelor's degree-granting institutions are invited to participate in NSSE to assess the quality of undergraduate education—providing institutions diagnostic, actionable information that fosters and catalyzes evidence-based improvement efforts. NSSE registration opens in June and closes in October for the following spring administration.

My first UNCF #UNITE was nothing short of amazing! The sessions were informative, and being immersed in the culture was a top-tier experience. I had the pleasure of connecting with my mentor and friend, Charlie Nelms, and supporting my former National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) colleagues, Christen Priddie, Leonard D. Taylor, PhD, and Jillian Kinzie during their presentation. Special thanks to Rev. Dr. Darryl Ann Lai Fang, Julian Thompson, Kendra Sharp, Ph.D and the entire UNCF Institute for Capacity Building team for creating space for partners and institutions of the Higher Endeavor Network to connect at #UNITE24. What do capstone courses, internships, first year seminars, common intellectual experiences, group projects, global perspectives, service learning, fostering learning communities, undergraduates working on research, and capturing these activities in a portfolio of work have in common? These are what the American Association of Colleges and Universities defines as high-impact practices. They are activities that the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) has proven to have an impact on student success – with outsized impact on underserved students.
