In celebration of National Disability Employment Month, Deaf Hub works toward increasing representation of DHH in health care and biomedical science career sectors. One way we do this is through educational offerings such as offering a workshop at Together RIT: A Day of Dialogue, which is hosted by RIT Division of Diversity and Inclusion. The 2024 Together RIT explores different dialogues and perspectives provided by the large Deaf community, neurodivergent individuals, and people with disabilities in broadening our understanding of our coexistence as creators, learners, scholars and peers. Tiffany L. Panko, MD, MBA, Deaf Hub’s Executive Director, Mariam Paracha, Deaf Hub Affiliate and Visiting Assistant Professor from the Department of Sciences and Mathematics, and Elizabeth Ayers, Deaf Hub’s Director of Healthcare Mentoring and Senior Lecturer from the Department of Sciences and Mathematics, hosted a roundtable discussion titled “Supporting Deaf and HoH Healthcare Professionals” to explore the challenges of recognition, equity, and justice facing DHH healthcare professionals. It is important to have an honest dialogue in a safe space and better understand the challenges of becoming a deaf or hard-of-hearing healthcare professional where we can create positive contributions to increase more representation of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in healthcare careers. In building solidarity with empathy and understanding together, we can elevate our recognition of our work, passions, ideas, initiatives and more to highlight the disability employment awareness, which in turn makes our space safer and welcoming for Deaf community, neurodivergent individuals, and people with disabilities. #ntiddeafhub #NationalDisabilityEmploymentMonth #deaf #dhh #asl #TogetherRIT #NTIDcommunity #RITcommunity #RIT #DHHcommunity [Image Description: In recognition of the National Disability Awareness Month, the 2024 Together RIT shows Tiffany Panko and Elizabeth Ayers standing together against the big screen titled, “Supporting Deaf and HoH Healthcare Professionals” with two additional pictures of their signing actions. In recognition of the Ultrasound Awareness Month, Deaf Hub would like to highlight deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) sonographers, professionals and students alike. Pictured are two NTID-supported students majoring in sonography and a healthcare professional, also a mentor to them. From right to left, Tyler Cardoso, 3rd year student, currently reviews the basics of ultrasound to prepare for his upcoming clinical rotation next year. Caty Goodman, 4th year student, undergoes her clinical rotations to gain more insights into the sonography profession. Lastly, Elizabeth Ayers, RDMS, RVT, is a Deaf sonographer and chairs the program, Mentor Supported Shadowing Program (MSSP) to continue her passion in advocating for DHH students and their pursuit of their healthcare careers. She may be the Deaf Hub’s Director of Healthcare Mentoring, but deep down, her big heart lies with mentoring DHH students to become a successful healthcare professional. In supporting Tyler’s and Caty’s endeavors, we are looking forward to watching them succeed in their clinical rotations! #ntiddeafhub #UltrasoundAwarenessMonth #deaf #asl #DHHCommunity #NTIDcommunity #RIT #RITcommunity #healthcare #healthcareprofessional #sonographer #ultrasound #bipoc [Image Description: From right to left, Tyler Cardoso, a light skinned man with short brown hair and gray sweater, Caty Goodman, a light skinned woman with long black hair and black jacket, Elizabeth Ayers, a light skinned woman with curly brown hair and pumpkin-decorated black sweater, smile into the camera against the ultrasound imaging of a bone. Cheers to Menna Nicola’s success! Menna Nicola, AS ‘23, gracefully accepted the offer to become a full-time Associate Information Technology Analyst with Dow during her studies in Human-Centered Computing for a bachelor’s science degree. She is expected to graduate in 2025. 1. Why is it important to have research or co-op experience that benefits your academic growth? Having research or co-op experience is important because it helps you determine if that career path is right for you. It also provides valuable experience and helps you build a professional network that will be beneficial for your career. 2. What is your message for those with different majors that might not typically fit into healthcare or biomedical careers, but who have made it work for themselves? My message for those with different majors that might not align with healthcare and biomedical careers is to be open-minded. You can apply your skills to this field, and who knows—you might find that you love it even more and become engaged in learning about it! We wish her the best of her future endeavors! #ritntid #ntiddeafhub #bipoc #deaf #ntidcommunity #dhh #asl [Image Description: Menna is wearing a sleeveless professional top, has short curly hair and golden hoops, and is smiling at the camera.]

Check out that Ulysses Hampton, a Bridges trainee, and his peers were involved in the panel discussion!
Yesterday, I had the honor of being on a panel with my peers Ulysses Hampton, Bryan Lukehart-Yun, Cody Campbell, and Yale Frink, discussing ways to enhance support for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in accessing R&D experiences in engineering. We also had the amazing opportunity to meet Sir Michael Stanley Whittingham, the Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry from 2019. It was an inspiring day!
