For this month’s #InfluencerSpotlight, we want to introduce you to Julia Stiglitz, CEO and Co-Founder of Uplimit. Julia is an influential leader in the edTech sector, driving innovation through her next-generation online learning platform. She’s made a significant impact through her work at companies like Coursera, as a Partner at GSV Ventures, and as a Board Member at Rocketship Public Schools. Now at Uplimit, Stiglitz focuses on creating high-impact upselling learning experiences. The company leverages AI to efficiently scale cohort-based learning programs. It addresses the growing demand for reskilling in a rapidly changing job market, especially as companies prepare for an AI-driven future. We asked Julia some questions so she can share some of her wisdom. What’s your best advice for a first-time executive? “Focus on hiring and developing a strong team around you. Your success largely depends on the talent you bring in and how you empower them to succeed. When you have a full plate of priorities and have pressure from the CEO and board to hire, it can be easy to let your hiring bar slip. Don’t do it! Also, look to hire for growth and potential, not just past experience. You want people who will grow and develop as your team and company expands and evolves. They should also focus on creating the right culture for their team. At Uplimit, one of our core values is that our only failure is not learning. This value creates a growth mindset in the team, encourages transparency, and allows the team to have the real conversations around “wins” and “losses,” and what it takes to succeed. This culture plays an existential role in startups and is equally important for larger companies, especially in today's dynamic market.” How do you stay updated with the latest trends in education and edTech? “I am lucky to stay in touch with many of my edtech colleagues (now friends!) from my past lives and I love learning from them about what they are seeing and thinking. I also use our investors, twitter, and research reports to understand the larger edTech context. But Uplimit’s customers truly provide the biggest source of inspiration—we work to understand their needs and wants, and then explore, research, and experiment into what’s technically possible.” What qualities do you admire in a leader? “More than any other quality, the one I most admire in leaders is being able to see the potential in ideas and people. Those leaders can look beyond how the world is today, and imagine something better. They see the potential in people, often even beyond what that person sees in themself.
