Raleigh, North Carolina, holds a special place in my heart. Not only is it a home away from home, but it’s also where my journey as an adjunct professor at North Carolina State University (NCSU) continues. This week, I’m here with colleagues from NWU as part of our relentless pursuit of internationalisation – a key strategic priority for the university. As one of South Africa’s institutions offering a nuclear engineering programme, NWU cannot afford to stand still. We’re here to meet with leading experts and deepen our knowledge, ensuring that we contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s energy future. Our schedule is packed with meetings with some of the world’s most renowned nuclear engineering experts. The knowledge and insights we gain here will add value to NWU’s nuclear engineering programme, ensuring we remain at the cutting edge. 🌟 Reflecting on an Incredible Experience at the North-West University / Noordwes-Universiteit Student Leadership Summit 2024! 🌟 I recently had the privilege of attending the NWU Student Leadership Summit on the 26th and 27th of September at ANEW Resort Hunters Rest in Rustenburg. The theme, "Future Leaders: Embracing Change and Innovating Tomorrow" was a powerful reminder of the impact we, as student leaders, can have on shaping the future of higher education. From the inspiring keynote by Prof. Bismark Tyobeka, our Vice-Chancellor, to engaging in a thought-provoking panel discussion on current trends and challenges in leadership, this summit provided invaluable insights and learning experiences. Meeting and networking with fellow student leaders and industry experts was truly enriching. It is an honour to represent North-West University / Noordwes-Universiteit alongside the South African delegation, led by Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, at the 68th International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference. This significant event brings together global leaders to discuss the peaceful uses of nuclear technology and its vital role in ensuring energy security.   At the recent Nuclear Energy Summit hosted by the Ministry of Electricity and Energy, I had the privilege of moderating a panel on Future Technology Prospects and their Strategic Importance. We explored key issues such as the revival of the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor and the potential of small modular reactors (SMRs) in South Africa’s energy mix. The discussions centred around innovation, nuclear waste management, and the geopolitical risks associated with nuclear technology vendors.   Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa's insights on nuclear energy’s role in transforming societies and combating climate change were especially resonant.
