When was the last time you were in a room full of mission-driven individuals dedicated to helping others? That’s exactly what the recent CLPHA Conference, presented by Home Forward, was all about.
I had the privilege of meeting and learning from public housing agencies across America, and it was nothing short of inspiring.
There was so much deep insight, it’s hard to list it all, but one thing that really stuck with me was a presentation by Andy Mendenhall M.D. He discussed how housing insecurity significantly impacts hospital utilization, particularly in emergency rooms.
By focusing on providing stable housing, we can actually reduce healthcare costs across the board.
This aligns so well with the work we’re doing at BuildingLens. As climate change worsens and we face more air quality and high heat events, we also need to ensure housing is sustainable and resilient, serving as a safe haven from these #climate events.
And I had the honor of really drilling into how we accomplish these goals in a lecture I presented with Carolina Gomez, where discussed the intersection of public housing and climate resilience.
Overall, this experience was honestly a series of blinking green lights for me, because through speaking with all these amazing mission-aligned people, it feels like we’re definitely on the right track with BuildingLens.
A big thank you to Home Forward for being such incredible organizers and setting the tone with authenticity. I was particularly moved by Ivory Mathews, who invited a local soul artist with a band and even got up to sing herself. Her vulnerability was truly inspiring.
And shout out to Kitty, the Chief People Officer for Home Forward, and Carolina, who has been an amazing partner. I look forward to much more meaningful work together.
