  • #DOC’s fraternal organizations and Correction Assistance Response for Employees Unit joined forces in #EastNewYork on Aug. 24 to help the next generation of leaders have a successful school year as part of their Seventh Annual Backpack Giveaway. The collaborative effort featured the distribution of more than 400 backpacks and other fun-filled activities with our partners in public safety #NYPD and #FDNY to help families kick off the 2024-2025 academic year. Each year, officials noted, they have worked together to host the event to both support the youth and reinforce to community members that The Boldest family is here to help them. “This generation will eventually assume leadership of the population. As adults, it is our responsibility to equip them today for success tomorrow. It takes a collective effort to help out the community, and this is our collective effort. That’s why they call us The Boldest,” said NYCD Disaster Relief Association President Officer Davis. “By partnering with our fellow fraternal organizations, the Bengali American Boldest Association strives to support and uplift our community and ensure that students are equipped for the school year ahead. Our mission is rooted in giving back and aiding those in need within our society,” Bengali American Boldest Association First Vice President Officer Rahman added. #JoinTheBoldest #BackToSchool2024

  • As we join the country today in celebrating #NationalDogDay, the spotlight is on K-9s Chief and Xena for their excellent work in finding highly dangerous drugs during searches of incoming mail on #RikersIsland. Both K-9s are trained to sniff out narcotics and have utilized their special skills every tour to help keep DOC’s employees, visitors and persons in custody safe. Most recently on Aug. 17, the K-9s retrieved an envelope with 10 sheets of paper infused with two of the most deadliest opioids in the world: fentanyl and heroin. Their due diligence not only stopped drug dealers in their tracks, but also enabled our bold Officers to subsequently notify a local law firm that its address was falsely used in a drug smuggling attempt. A special thank you goes to these four-legged heroes for assisting DOC in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking. A shout-out also goes to handlers Officer Villodas and Officer Alneus for their superb leadership with the K-9s as they work together to serve and protect on #Rikers. Working in our K-9 Unit is one of the many career advancement opportunities at DOC. Take the first step to a rewarding career in law enforcement today by registering for the next #NYCDCAS Correction Officer test at on.nyc.gov/3TaKlAf. #JoinTheBoldest #MondayMotivation

  • With their families in attendance, persons in custody at the Eric M. Taylor Center on #RikersIsland celebrated their completion of fitness and counseling sessions, art workshops and other programs at the facility during a Community Engagement Day on Aug. 19.         As part of the programming, individuals in custody were able to spend quality time with their loved ones by participating in interactive games and more as they continue to work each day to achieve a brighter future.        “These events are an invaluable opportunity for persons in custody to bond with their loved ones in a supportive environment. During the event, they received certificates, and it was heartwarming to see their families there to congratulate them. The sense of pride and accomplishment was palpable, and it reinforced the importance of family support in rehabilitation,” said Executive Director Ovalles.

  • Members of The Boldest are doing their part to help #NYC students get ready for the new school year. On Aug. 20, Officers in the NYCD Bangladeshi Correction Society and #COBA teamed up with NYC Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs to host a #BackToSchool Fair in the #Bronx. During the event, over 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies were distributed to families in the community to help jump-start the 2024-2025 school year. “Backpack drives are a vital tool for supporting students, promoting equal educational opportunities and strengthening community bonds. Our students are the future of our nation and we want to continue to do what we can to help them,” said #NYCDBCS President Officer Hasan. “We also believe as Correction Officers, as first responders, that it is our responsibility to create a bond between the kids and our members to help uphold our Department. We want the kids and community members to know that we are here to help.” #JoinTheBoldest #ThrowbackThursday

  • On Aug. 19, persons in custody at the Rose M. Singer Center on #RikersIsland celebrated #BackToSchool2024 with their families during a special Community Engagement Day. The event, which culminated with a backpack filled with school supplies distribution for the kids, also provided mothers with an opportunity to spend quality time with their children as they prepare for a successful 2024-2025 academic year. With leadership from officials in #DOC’s Division of Programs and Community Partnerships, the families also participated in games, face painting, dancing and other fun-filled activities to help kickoff another school year. “Events like the Back-to-School Family Days are important in order to normalize the family aspect for incarcerated individuals and their family members. Being able to create the memory of receiving school supplies from their parents, grandparents, aunts, and sisters is important to help create positivity in the minds of those children regardless of their loved one’s incarceration status,” Program Coordinator Swinton explained. “It was also a very rewarding experience for the RMSC programs team and the providers; Hour Children, Osborne and the Women’s Community Justice Association to witness such a successful and family-oriented event.”

For many, working at #DOC represents not only assisting with public safety throughout New York City, but also utilizing their extensive correctional experience to help law enforcement address social issues plaguing communities nationally. On Aug. 10, members of our Correction Intelligence Bureau visited #NewOrleans to educate municipalities from across the country about Drill Rap and gang violence during the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) 48th Annual Training Conference and Exhibition. During the presentation, Assistant Deputy Warden Guity and Officer Investigator Gaie explained how the music is historically connected to street gang activity, which is one of the leading causes of Black youth incarceration in #NewYorkCity. This latest presentation, and many others like it across #NYC, is part of the bureau’s ongoing gang awareness and prevention outreach. Take the first step to a rewarding career in law enforcement today by registering for the next #NYCDCAS #CorrectionOfficer test at on.nyc.gov/3TaKlAf. #JoinTheBoldest #MondayMotivation
