About us

The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation is New York City's principal provider of recreational and athletic facilities and programs. Our parks are home to free concerts, world-class sports events, and cultural festivals. Parks & Recreation is the steward of nearly 14 percent of New York City's land, including thousands of individual properties ranging from Coney Island Beach and Central Park to community gardens and Greenstreets. We operate athletic fields, playgrounds, tennis courts, public pools, recreational facilities, nature centers, golf courses, and beaches throughout the five boroughs. We also care for monuments and historic house museums and look after hundreds of thousands of street trees (even more within parks).

Updates

  • Yesterday, we cut the ribbon for new improvements to the playground at New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Sotomayor Houses! With ADA-accessible play equipment, water features, a seating area, and fun legal-themed details, this project is part of a $23 million interagency initiative to renovate playgrounds and open spaces at NYCHA sites. "Our City's public open spaces are vital for strengthening community connections, improving health, and enhancing public safety, as well as providing a venue for play and relaxation,” said NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue at the ribbon cutting. "We are thrilled to unveil these playground enhancements at Sotomayor Houses with our partners at NYCHA. We are sure that this revitalized playground will be enjoyed by NYCHA residents and community members alike for many years to come."

  • Thanks to everyone who helped us put together a fun and successful beach and pool season this summer. More than 8 million patrons came out to our beaches and outdoor pools, as we reopened Astoria Pool, brought back our popular Senior Splash program, and took steps to address the nationwide lifeguard shortage through a new City agreement with District Council 37. In particular, we would like to thank our lifeguards, Parks Enforcement Patrol officers, and other public safety workers who helped us save 30 New Yorkers from drowning this year. Thank you for helping keep New Yorkers safe.

  • Today, NYC Parks' Natural Resource Group celebrates 40 years of caring for nature in NYC. In 1984, then NYC Parks Commissioner Henry J. Stern created the Natural Resources Group, a division solely dedicated to the study and preservation of the city’s forests, marshes, and wetlands and the wildlife, people, and processes that rely on them. For 40 years, our Natural Resources Group has worked tirelessly to help vulnerable species thrive across NYC, from saltmarsh sparrow breeding in the Bronx to the Turk's Cap Lily restoration on Staten Island. In partnership with the Natural Areas Conservancy and the New York Botanical Garden we've gathered advocates, experts, and enthusiasts at the Forever Wild Symposium to amplify accomplishments and lessons learned and share new challenges and strategies in the face of climate change and ecological crises. Read about our success stories celebrating the NRG's work keeping NYC wild here: on.nyc.gov/4gLDird

  • Happy Mexican Independence Day, NYC! 🇲🇽 Celebrate in Bryant Park with a visit to the newly buffed, cleaned, & recoated bronze of Benito Juárez, Mexico's first indigenous President & a leader for independence. Thanks to our Monuments Conservation Crew for keeping statues like these preserved for generations to come!

  • Today is a great day for NYC's resiliency. Thanks to NYC Department of Design and Construction, today we opened East River Park ballfields 1 & 2 and the Delancey Street Bridge, the first step in our integration of enhanced flood protection with our vital recreational facilities. Thanks to our city's efforts and leadership, we are safeguarding our city against future threats of climate change and enhancing our quality of life. Play ball!

  • Move over, Nicole Kidman, there's another home for movie magic. 💫 Almost every day during the warmer months, our outdoor Movies Under the Stars team is setting up, bringing a free family-friendly movie to a park near you. Our NYC Parks Commissioner, Sue Donoghue, visited a park recently before showtime, and, well...we were inspired! Let our parks be the home of a summer tradition that you and your friends and family will remember forever. There's still time to check out free outdoor movies in the parks before the summer ends! Check out our link in bio for an updated schedule. After all, we make movies ... Parkier! 🎥

  • Sometimes, solving our trash problems really IS like putting a square box in a round hole. But worry no more! Today, we announced the installation of six new trash cans designed for pizza boxes! Their large footprint clogs up ordinary trashcans which leads to spilling, trash pile-up, & more. These new bins will make it easier for pizza lovers to dispose of large boxes and for us to more efficiently clean our Parks!
