Aviation Career and Technical Education High School in Long Island City is the largest public aeronautics high school in the US, and for nearly 90 years it has prepared the city's youth for careers in the aerospace industry. Yesterday, NYC Talent's Abby Jo Sigal, Michelle Rosa and Grant Yanney had the opportunity to see firsthand how this landmark institution is educating its students for future careers through a robust STEM curriculum, hands on learning with real airplanes, and industry support and mentoring. Thank you to Principal Steven Jackson and your amazing students for sharing your stories and passion for this industry, and for demonstrating how Aviation Career and Technical Education High School continues to play a critical role in developing our region's aeronautical talent. On October 15th NYC Talent's Abby Jo Sigal was invited to speak to graduates from Per Scholas' BDC Cohort-1 in the South Bronx. This fantastic program partners with PeopleShores and Accenture to develop industry informed curriculum to train full stack developers over 6 months and then places the cohort into a yearlong paid apprenticeship with PeopleShores. Upon completing the 18-month apprenticeship, cohort members have the opportunity to join Accenture as full-time developers. Per Scholas is leading the way to help make our city's economy more inclusive and equitable by connecting the city's diverse talent in neighborhoods like the South Bronx to family sustaining careers in the high growth and in-demand tech sector. Proud to be on such a hardworking, ambitious team that continues to break down barriers and improve services for the New Yorkers who need them most.
On October 9th, The City of New York held a customer service award ceremony to honor the contributions of municipal employees who made the Jobs NYC hiring hall pilot such an incredible success. Among those receiving awards were NYC Talent's Leah Hebert, Daniel Liss, Joe Rhoades, Grant Yanney, Kimberly Howard and Miles Elijah Gamble! From February - July 2024 the city held 26 hiring halls in all 5 boroughs, which resulted in 8500 individuals being connected to jobs, free training and workforce development services. This whole of government approach spanned multiple Deputy Mayor teams and city agencies, leveraging the passion and dedication of hundreds of committed civil servants. NYC Talent is honored to have played a critical role in developing and launching the Jobs NYC pilot and continues to play a strategic role in collaboration with NYC Department of Small Business Services in leading the next phase of Jobs NYC hiring halls.
