NYC's only hands-on science and technology center. Serving the most diverse audience of any science center in the U.S.

About us

Since its founding at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair, the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) has inspired millions of people—children, teachers, and families– by offering creative, participatory ways to learn and encouraging people to explore their curiosity and nurture their creativity. Located in Queens, the most ethnically diverse county in the country, NYSCI welcomes 500,000 visitors each year and serves thousands more through outreach in schools, teacher professional development, and participation in a variety of public events and research initiatives. NYSCI is a leader in the science museum field, recognized for its highly regarded exhibitions, programs, and products, all of which are informed by strategies of engagement called Design, Make, Play. The defining characteristics of Design, Make, Play — open-ended exploration, imaginative learning, personal relevance, deep engagement, and delight — are the ingredients that inspire passionate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learners. NYSCI engages diverse communities of learners, particularly young people, in STEM, by fostering the excitement of self-directed exploration and by tapping into the joy of learning intrinsic in young people’s play. Our transformative model for STEM exploration invites broad participation and makes engagement and learning irresistible. NYSCI has approximately 80 full-time and over 65 part-time staff members.

Join us for our "Mathematica Reimagined" Opening Celebration on Sunday, October 20th at 4pm! We will cut the ribbon on a restored and reimagined "Mathematica" that draws on NYSCI’s Design Make Play approach. The new "Mathematica" will illuminate connections between big mathematical ideas and the ways design can help us think and explore. During this re-opening event, we will have math-themed activity carts, a ribbon cutting, and welcome remarks from: Lisa Gugenheim, President & CEO, NYSCI Katie Culp, Chief Learning Officer, NYSCI Dario Gil, SVP and Director of Research, IBM - the company that sponsored the original exhibition in 1961!

Did you know that The Great Hall building was designed to mimic the feeling of being in deep outer space? Or that the blue stained glass was a nod to making the building feel like a 'Cathedral' of science in NYC? Learn more about this iconic, beautiful building during one of our tours on Sunday, October 20th - at 3 and 4:30pm with general admission tickets, same day as our "Mathematica Reimagined" opening - at 4pm - which includes special activities and remarks from NYSCI VIP and IBM, which is the company that sponsored the original exhibition in 1961. Sunday, October 20th: Join us as we cut the ribbon on a restored and reimagined "Mathematica" exhibition! Drawing on NYSCI’s Design Make Play approach, Mathematica has been enhanced in ways that will illuminate connections between big mathematical ideas and the innovative ways design can help us think and explore in new ways. In 1961, IBM commissioned "Mathematica: A World of Numbers." It was the first interactive exhibition to be devoted entirely to mathematics. The exhibition has been on permanent display at NYSCI since 2004, allowing visitors to relish in its beauty and multilayered exploration of the power of mathematics to describe and illuminate our world. During this re-opening event, we will have math-themed activity carts, a ribbon cutting, and welcome remarks from: Lisa Gugenheim, President & CEO, NYSCI Katie Culp, Chief Learning Officer, NYSCI Dario Gil, SVP and Director of Research, IBM We hope to see you! This is the same day as our tours of the Great Hall at 3pm and 4:30pm.

We were amazed to see so many youth attend our recent College Career Fair! Thank you to all who came for an enriching experience to learn more about the resources that can support the exploration of STEM-based careers. Gratitude always to the NYSCI Staff, NYSCI Explainers, college and university representatives, community based organizations, Women in STEM panelists and Financial aid presenters who dedicated their time to a great cause! Special thanks to Loro Piana, who enabled us to curate this event for youth to gain access to people and important resources towards higher education.

We were so happy to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at the Hall of Science this week thanks to Queens Borough President Donovan Richards and Catalina Cruz NY! In addition to the festivities, we were also excited to host an ID NYC truck so that anyone in the city, regardless of their immigration status, if they are housed or not, or any other reason that might make obtaining ID difficult, could get one right on site.
