Happy Water Professionals Appreciation Week! Today, Oakland Public Works would like to take a moment to thank one of the hardworking pros in our Department. Barry Nixon is a leader in our Storm Drainage Division who has served with the City for more than 29 years. Barry and his colleagues are busy inspecting and clearing debris from storm drains at flood-prone sites across Oakland. Our storm sewer system contains more than 402 miles of pipe and 12,000+ inlets, and this critical work keeps our stormwater water flowing smoothly to reduce flooding when heavy rains hit . 🙌 Let’s take a moment to appreciate Barry and his team! If you’d like to help your community prepare for the rainy season, consider adopting a drain! Sign up at https://hubs.la/Q02T9b3n0

Today, as part of Water Professionals Appreciation Week, we recognize Michael for his incredible contributions helping bridge Oakland’s engineering and maintenance teams to keep the City’s wastewater systems running smoothly and reliably. Let’s support Michael and our community by making sure fats, oils, and grease are not poured down the drain in our homes or businesses. This simple step makes a big difference in maintaining Oakland's wastewater systems and preventing sewer overflows. Visit https://hubs.la/Q02T09Y_0 for tips and resources.

Oakland Public Works is expanding the illegal dumping surveillance camera program by adding fifteen new License Plate Reader (LPR)-equipped cameras to our arsenal, and retrofitting the existing cameras with LPR technology. We will now have a 24/7 view of thirty illegal dumping hotspots across Oakland. As these hotspots gradually cool, the cameras will be rotated to new locations to keep repeat dumpers on their toes. Adding LPRs could more than double the effectiveness of these cameras. If you’re tired of habitual dumpers trashing Oakland communities, join us in fighting back. Report any illegal dumping you see to OAK311. If you have photos or other information that could help identify dumpers, include them in your 311 service request. https://hubs.la/Q02SGZ4b0

Race and Equity Analyst, City of Oakland Department of Race and Equity

What is Equity? These days there is a lot of misinformation and confusion about it. Many confuse it with diversity or affirmative action, belonging or discrimination but equity is a process to bring balance into policy decisions and planning actions to address unfairness. This is a great 9-minute video on how local governments can effectively collaborate with the community to boost resilience and implement real equity in their projects and planning. It highlights the work of one of Oakland Parks Recreation & Youth Development's recreation centers, the Lincoln Square Recreation Center. It also highlights the work done by other Bay Area cities and communities. organizations. Save it for your watch list, for when you're feeling down/tired/exhausted/frustrated, to lift you and remind you, why and how, the hard work that you all do, in keeping the city going, matters and that equity is about all of us. https://lnkd.in/gBhP2Aid
