Just in time for the Try Transit Week, Oaks & Spokes’ GoPass is NOW AVAILABLE to all active members! Since 2020, all GoRaleigh and GoTriangle buses have been free to use. However, starting on September 1st, both GoRaleigh and GoTriangle buses resumed charging fares. Because we believe that public transit plays a vital role in creating a more sustainable and equitable Raleigh, we felt our members should still be able to ride the bus for free. If your membership is up-to-date and “active,” you should have received an email with an activation code recently. You can use that code to redeem your GoPass through the Umo Mobility app after registering with your name and email. Not an Oaks & Spokes member yet? Or you have let your previous membership lapsed? Use this link below to sign up or renew your membership: https://lnkd.in/efxqME23 #GoTriangle #GoRaleigh #TryTransit #Transit #Commute #RideTheBus

Help steer Oaks and Spokes’ direction for the next 3-5 years! ⤴️⤵️🔀 This Thursday we are inviting our members and also our friendly Raleigh neighbors to join us at Oaks City Cycling shop on N. Person St., sharing ideas and providing guidance on our upcoming strategic plan, which will guide the organization’s work. We will have a small activity for participants, allowing you to learn what you, a cyclist or pedestrian in Raleigh, would like to see from your local Active Transportation advocacy organization. 📐✂️✏️ If you live in Raleigh, or Raleigh adjacent, and our name is not familiar to you, then please consider this invitation intentionally for you, and asking you to come out and see us so we can introduce ourselves. This is a great opportunity to share your thoughts on what’s most important to you when it comes to bicycle and pedestrian advocacy, community, education, and more! When: This Thursday, August 22nd, from 7 - 9 p.m. Where: Oak City Cycling There will be refreshment provided. Come hang out with us, and let's chat about the visions and the future we see for the City of Oaks. #oaksandspokes #advocacy #activetransportation #noparkingbikelane #bikeraleigh #raleigh #raleighnc

As we were preparing for the Ride of Silence event last month, we partnered with NC Families for Safer Streets and researched the following statistics: 1. North Carolina Bicycle Crash Facts - In 2023, 43 people were killed and 749 people were injured while riding a bike on North Carolina roads. - Over the last 5 years (2019 – 2023), 135 people were killed and another 3,307 people were injured while bicycling on North Carolina roads 2. North Carolina Pedestrian Crash Facts - In 2023, 249 people were killed and 2,238 people injured as result of pedestrian crashes on North Carolina roads. - Over the last 5 years (2019-2023), 1,285 people were killed and a staggering 10,881 pedestrians injured on the North Carolina Roads. Road violence is No Accident, it's policy failure, it's years of subsidizing Public Health for "One more car lane, and we can solve traffic problem." #VisionZero #NCVisionZero #BikeWalkNC #OaksAndSpokes #BicycleAdvocacy #BicycleSafety #BikeSafety #ThankYouForRidingYourBike https://lnkd.in/eE8UsVQ2

In honor of 🚲 Bike Month 🚲 , one of our amazing members has offered to match all donations to Oaks and Spokes up to $2,000 🙌 So far, we’ve raised $625, and with the match, that makes $1,250! Donating to Oaks and Spokes supports our mission of building a vibrant biking community in Raleigh. Your contribution helps us organize fun and unique bike events for all experience levels, advocate for safer streets and sustainable transportation options, offer bike education programs for kids and adults, and provide bicycles and essential tools to people with lower incomes and higher barriers of mobility, empowering them to be active and mobile without a car. Bike Month is such a fun community wide celebration! I loved supporting it through events this year. The engine that keeps our biking advocacy community moving forward is Oaks & Spokes - the amount of programming they brought forward this May was simply amazing. They have a donation match through the end of the month (tomorrow). Send some support their way to keep Raleigh rolling. ⏬ 🚲 Donate: https://lnkd.in/deTfmJpA 📷 Jared Harber, Oaks and Spokes

Additionally there have been studies that show cyclists and other lane users preferred separated or protected bike lane for the user-perceived safety and comfort while traveling. On Wednesday, May 15 starting at 6 pm, advocates will gather at the State Capitol to honor the people killed while cycling on NC roads, and to call on Raleigh City Councils and NC State Legislature to open up the state transportation improvement project funding and to increase funding for dedicated bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. This event is one of hundreds happening across the countries and states. Over the last 5 years (2019 – 2023), 134 people were killed and another 3,306 people were injured while bicycling on North Carolina roads. In the same 5 years span, 2 people were killed and 233 people were injured in bicycle crashes right here in Raleigh. WHAT: Raleigh Ride of Silence. A memorial display will feature pairs of shoes to represent the 134 people killed while riding a bicycle on North Carolina roads over the past five years. 42 candles will represent the people killed while riding a bicycle in 2023. The memorial will be followed by a 4.2 miles bicycle ride on the streets of downtown Raleigh to commemorate the occasion. WHEN: Wednesday, May 15th, 2024, starting at 6 pm (pending weather condition) WHERE: State Capitol, 1 E Edenton St., Raleigh, NC, 27601 WHY: Traffic deaths are a leading cause of preventable death, disproportionately harming people who are walking and biking, people of color and people in low-income communities. This event will be held to commemorate the losses, and to advocate for active transportation infrastructure improvements to prevent these tragic losses in the future. VISUALS: Event will include a memorial with candles and pairs of shoes to represent the 134 people killed while riding a bicycle on NC roads from 2019 – 2023. Last Friday, I was so happy to be one of the co-leaders putting on the City of Raleigh's annual Bike Bonanza event again. The yearly kick-off in Raleigh for Bike Month, we were delighted to be hosted by #PullenPark and have so many terrific partners in attendance, from GoTriangle and Oaks & Spokes to East Coast Electric Speed Shop and the Oak City Cycling Project, this is hands down one of the best events on our calendar. Thanks again to my co-leader, Rachel Anderson, M.A., for all of her efforts and hard work in coordinating and managing dozens of projects for it. If you didn't have the opportunity to join us this year, we hope to see you next year! #bikemonth #cyclingcommunity #MayisBikeMonth

The title of the article may seem like a hyperbole, but it accurately described the limitation, and at times frustration, of the kind of active transportation advocacy work from BikeWalk North Carolina and Oaks and Spokes, and other advocacy groups like us across this state. There are plenty of facts and statistics in The Assembly article below, but here are more "fun facts": -The exactly language passed in the 2013 law: "Bicycle and pedestrian limitation. – The Department shall not provide financial support for independent bicycle and pedestrian improvement projects, except for federal funds administered by the Department for that purpose." ("Department" here refers to NCDOT) (source: G.S. 136-189.11(d)(3)c, https://lnkd.in/gpBfSh6P) -Federal level funding on these project requires a 20 percent project fund matching, which can be hard to fulfilled by local and rural municipalities. (source: "MATCH REQUIREMENTS", https://lnkd.in/gwbTwDDs) -Other than Texas, North Carolina has more miles of state-maintained roads than any other states, more than 80,000 miles of road surface. (source: "Yes, North Carolina has more miles of state-supported roads than every other state except for Texas", https://lnkd.in/gTN7Thte) #activeTransportation #bicycle #pedestrian #bikeLane #sidewalk #BikeWalk
