We recently celebrated the groundbreaking of the long-anticipated renovation projects at Hindley, Holmes, and Royle Elementary Schools. This momentous occasion marks the beginning of a transformation that will see portable classrooms removed, new instructional spaces added, and upgraded facilities to enhance the learning experience for students. These renovations, costing over $101 million and partially funded by a state grant, promise to significantly improve the schools. Shout out to KG+D Architects, PC, for their fantastic designs and our joint venture partner, A.P. Construction Company! #DarienSchools #Community #Education #Renovation#SchoolRenovation #ElementarySchool #SchoolConstruction

"On the Road" Concrete adventures of Dom1 & Dom2 continued in Week 7. 🚘 When last we met our Chico State CIM intern, Dominic Lencioni (I finally started spelling his name correctly!) we had completed a tour of Tilcon Connecticut. (Again for those just joining these posts, Dominic (D2) is a paid intern working with New Line Skateparks under an internship, supported by Crystal Howard of Skate4Concrete, to build a concrete skatepark in Torrington Connecticut. Dominic works Monday through Thursday on the skate park construction and shadows this Dominic (D1) on Fridays to learn about other aspects of concrete and construction). This week we ventured to another Connecticut Concrete Promotion Council member, Urban Mining Industries - Pozzotive®, where Louis P. Grasso, Jr. was kind enough to give Dominic a step by step tour of the ground recycled glass production in his plant. Dom2 learned how Urban Mining takes recycled consumer glass from the surrounding municipalities and cleans, processes and grinds it down to a fine pozzolan to replace cement in concrete mixes. This effectively reduces the carbon footprint while improving the compressive strength of the placed concrete. We then traveled to New Canaan Connecticut where we saw the New Canaan Library, a National Ready Mixed Concrete Association Concrete Innovation Award winning project which has Pozzotive pozzolans in the concrete provided by O&G Industries, Inc.. After lunch in the retro New Canaan Diner, we then visited with Franco DiDemetrio of Regency Construction, LLC who is building a Nudura Insulated Concrete Forms home for a client. The basement had just been freshly poured and finished that morning, so Dominic got to see the ICF construction. He asked a lot of great questions, as this method of concrete construction was totally new to him. Now fully versed in all aspects of insulated concrete forms (ICFs) 😂 , the Dom-mobile moved on to Greenwich Connecticut where Sam Carvalho, PM for Carbon Custom Builders, was kind enough to take us on a full tour of a 20,000 sq. ft Nudura Insulated Concrete Forms home. Sam took Dominic through every area of the home and explained how it all tied into the ICF construction. Sam showed Dom the steel beams that will support a concrete deck second floor exercise room, the geothermal system laid in the Nudura Hydrofoam Radiant Heat floor system, even the special surface "clay" tennis court (which is enclosed with an ICF wall). We learned that Sam was a skateboarder, so Dom and Sam shared information about the parks they have skated. Another busy and hot day! This week we may pivot from some foundation construction and colored concrete placements (due to the probable heavy rains from the remnants of Hurricane Debby), so stay tuned!
