Advancing reconciliation and healing between families affected by war.
About us
OBON SOCIETY is a non-profit humanitarian effort dedicated to the pursuit of peace. We provide the opportunity for reconciliation between families through the return of personal "non-biological" remains taken during the war. We help those who have these heirlooms and would like to return them to the rightful owners.

We are grateful to the Battleship Missouri Memorial for creating a short video that captures our visit to Pearl Harbor, where we received three Yosegaki Hinomaru flags during the ceremony. We are committed to doing our best to locate and return each of these flags to their families in Japan. https://lnkd.in/gkAih2E7 #USSMissouri #OBON #Peace #Friendship #Reconciliation

🌟 Exciting News! This week, our Curatorial Assistant, Molly Hagan had the privilege of speaking with Hawaii Public Radio about the discovery of three Yosegaki Hinomaru flags in our archival collection. These flags hold profound significance, representing the personal stories of Japanese servicemen during World War II. We are proud to collaborate with the OBON SOCIETY to return these flags to their rightful families. Want to learn more? Join us for a virtual webinar tomorrow, 10/24 at Noon HST, featuring Rex Ziak. Together, we’ll explore the powerful narratives behind these flags and their importance to our shared history. Don’t miss it! 🎌✨ https://lnkd.in/gjp5xTM7 https://lnkd.in/gcMrXg8N

While it's only been a few years since I've had the flag, it is a lifetime for any remaining family. If you do find any, please extend my apologies for not acting sooner. I ask for forgiveness on behalf of my entire family. I hope this brings some comfort in a world where there is little of it. Supporter in Alaska

Please join us for a special Zoom presentation on Thursday, October 24th hosted by the USS Missouri. We recently received three Yosegaki Hinomaru during a Flag Transfer Ceremony held in the Captain's cabin on October 3rd. We hope to share our on going efforts to further deepen the people-to-people exchanges that form the unwavering foundation of the Japan-US relationship. https://lnkd.in/g2VnNcNd

Inspiring Words from OBON SOCIETY Supporters With your help, perhaps the nonbiological remains of the Japanese soldier held under glass at the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force will be positively identified and his spirit will be repatriated to his family in Japan. As once explained: when Americans go to war, they fight to win, but when that war is over Americans do not punish the families of the defeated fallen. Museum Supporter Atlanta, GA
