In an impressive feat of engineering, #ElonMusk’s SpaceX successfully retrieved the booster of a Starship prototype on land for the first time during a test flight on Oct. 13. The test was Starship’s fifth experimental flight and marked a major milestone for SpaceX’s dreams of eventually creating a fully reusable rocket system capable of sending humans and cargo to the Moon and Mars. “The world witnessed what the future will look like when Starship starts carrying crew and cargo to destinations on Earth, the Moon, Mars and beyond,” said SpaceX in a statement. 2024 A.I. Power List Spotlight: Eric Schmidt, Schmidt Sciences Eric Schmidt is the kind of power player who reshapes industries and leaves a seismic impact wherever he steps. As Google’s CEO and chairman during its defining decade, Schmidt took the reins of a scrappy startup and turned it into the digital behemoth that dictates the very terms of modern life. But Schmidt didn’t stop there—he became a kingmaker in the A.I. world with his portfolio reading like a who’s who of artificial intelligence: alongside #Bill Gates, #Reid Hoffman, #Microsoft and #NVIDIA, Schmidt poured a jaw-dropping $1.3 billion into #OpenAI, transforming the startup into a four-time unicorn practically overnight. At #Google, Schmidt instituted a policy allowing employees to devote 20 percent of their time to any project they’d like. As Schmidt tells Observer, “This helped foster a culture of creative thinking and interdisciplinarity at the company, generating some of our most successful initiatives. In the age of A.I., innovation will similarly come from taking risks and experimenting with bold, new ideas.” Read the full profile: https://lnkd.in/edhq26kT #observerpowerlists #AIPowerList

The U.S. is grappling with a significant shortage of mental health professionals. According to a recent survey by HRSA, over 60 percent of therapists cannot accept new patients due to high demand. As a result, one in three individuals today are left waiting for months before accessing care, with low-income areas and communities of color being the most affected. Moreover, challenges, including high costs of therapy, limited availability and social stigma toward mental healthcare compound these issues. Aiming to fill some of the shortcomings in the space, A.I. mental health care companies are cropping up, claiming to make mental health care better and more accessible. 2024 A.I. Power List Spotlight: Jeff McMillan, Morgan Stanley As Morgan Stanley’s first Head of Firmwide AI, Jeff McMillian sits in a powerful seat dedicated to developing the investment bank’s framework for #AI strategy and governance. In earlier roles with the company, the wealth management veteran led analytics, data and innovation, solidifying an exclusive partnership with #OpenAI and establishing Morgan Stanley as the first Wall Street firm to leverage GPT-4 into an A.I. solution. “Let’s remember what has always mattered, and I believe always will: Strong leadership, cross-functional engagement, high standards of ethical behavior and a culture of ongoing learning and improvement,” McMillan tells Observer. “A.I. should enhance human capabilities, not replace them. The aim is to use A.I. to drive efficiency, improve decision-making, deepen our understanding of the world, and make knowledge more accessible.” Read the full profile: https://lnkd.in/gpEdhibg #observerpowerlists #AIPowerList

Imagine spending your entire working life building a home you intend to pass on to your children. If you educate them about vital maintenance, such as checking the foundations, managing the plumbing and being vigilant about pest control, they can enjoy the home for the entirety of their lives and potentially even pass it on to their children. Conversely, without this education, the home is more likely to fall into disrepair. Maintaining this home’s legacy requires active participation and education to ensure it lasts for years to come. Yet, regarding a financial legacy, some think the concept of inheritance requires more of an ethical education (i.e., don’t spend it all in one place!) than a practical one. 2024 A.I. Power List Spotlight: Yoshua Bengio, Université de Montréal Yoshua Bengio’s breakthroughs in natural language processing in the 2000s helped lay the groundwork for #generativeAI. The Canadian computer scientist and professor founded the Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (MILA), a world leader in academic research on deep learning, which has raised more than $300 million from the Canadian government and partnerships with #Google, #Microsoft and #Meta. His research in deep learning and neural networks won him the 2018 A.M. Turing Award, known as the “Nobel Prize of Computing,” and the 2019 Killam Prize, one of Canada’s most prestigious research awards. “I was inspired by the idea that there could be a few simple principles, like the laws of physics, that would explain our intelligence and allow us to build intelligent machines,” Bengio tells Observer. Looking ahead, he adds, “I hope we will have solved the riddle of how to design A.I. that is safe from catastrophic misuse and loss of control.” Read the full profile: https://lnkd.in/giQnB2GQ #observerpowerlists #AIPowerList

While hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, blizzards, drought and wildfires make the headlines with these billion-dollar disasters, it’s everyday weather that’s having a major impact on retailers and manufacturers of seasonal products, from Wall Street to Main Street. You’ve probably heard that if the world is one degree warmer over the next few decades, then it’s the point of no return when it comes to Earth’s climate. But most businesses can’t act on that information, as it lacks the specificity needed to make actionable everyday decisions that retailers, seasonal category manufacturers, financial services, agriculture, pharma and Main Street have to make when planning their business for next year.
