Fresh off the Press – Danish Shipping Policy Paper on Whale Strikes! I frequently get asked about the impact of shipping on biodiversity. It’s not an easy question to answer, because, quite frankly, it’s still early days in terms of what we know for certain about the sector’s impact. However, there are some obvious areas to focus on, and whale strikes are one of them. I look forward to delving deeper into the impact of shipping in the time to come. Stay tuned... How Can Assertive Communication Enhance Shipboard Safety? In maritime operations, effective communication is as vital as the ship’s structure. Assertive communication ensures every voice is heard and concerns are addressed, fostering a safer work environment. Techniques like PACE (Probe, Alert, Challenge, Emergency) and the 5-step assertive statement help mariners raise issues before they become critical, enhancing safety and teamwork. Leadership plays a key role by encouraging open communication, empowering crew members to contribute to the vessel’s safety. The training video 🎥 "Effective Leadership & Assertiveness At Sea" explores how communication impacts maritime safety, covering topics like Bridge Resource Management, closed-loop communication, cultural barriers, and conflict resolution. Watch the video here: https://lnkd.in/eFWK7TCA Clear communication strategies create a safer, more efficient onboard environment. Bridging Gaps in Maritime Safety with Practical Training Resources As part of the OCEAN project, The Nautical Institute conducted research to identify gaps in Maritime Education and Training (MET) standards. By examining minimum standards and highlighting examples from organisations demonstrating exceptional safety performance, this research paved the way for significant improvements. The result? Seven free maritime training videos 📹 developed to address these gaps, offering more than just another resource—they are practical tools designed to enhance situational awareness and promote navigation best practices. These videos support mariners, helping them navigate safely and effectively. This License consent form (link below) allows the use of the videos within a training environment, making them invaluable for organisations and institutions aiming to improve knowledge and raise awareness on vital maritime topics. Whether used in lectures, presentations, or educational sessions, these videos are a vital asset for enhancing maritime safety. ⚓ 🔗 License Consent Form: https://lnkd.in/ewuUwVjh 🔗 Download the Project Outline Form: chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://lnkd.in/eQckY9hd Check out the videos: https://lnkd.in/e8rmH74j #MaritimeSafety #Training #Education

How Can Assertive Communication Enhance Shipboard Safety? In the high-stakes environment of maritime operations, effective communication is just as crucial as the vessel's structure. Assertive communication is not just about speaking up; it is about ensuring that every voice is heard and every concern is addressed, leading to a safer and more cohesive working environment. 🤝 Implementing assertiveness techniques like PACE (Probe, Alert, Challenge, Emergency) and the 5-step assertive statement can significantly reduce risks by empowering mariners to raise concerns before they escalate into critical issues. These methods offer structured ways to challenge authority or procedures when safety is on the line, helping prevent accidents before they happen. However, assertiveness goes beyond just voicing concerns. It is about fostering an environment where feedback loops, active listening, and cultural understanding create a strong foundation for teamwork and trust. Leadership plays a pivotal role in this; by encouraging open communication, leaders can ensure that all crew members feel confident in their ability to contribute to the vessel's safety. 🎥The video "Effective Leadership & Assertiveness At Sea" is part of a training series that delves into the impact of communication techniques on maritime safety, offering practical strategies for every mariner. 🔍 How can better ship design improve maritime safety? 🚢 Ships are not just structures; they bring together humans, technology, and nature and require careful management to ensure safety at sea. It is important to consider effective systems and ergonomically sound designs to enhance maritime safety. Poor design can lead to increased risks and accidents, which can have serious real-world consequences. Mariners' insights are crucial for preventing accidents and making better decisions at sea. Technological shortcomings impact maritime operations, and mariners should speak up about equipment issues to drive change. Human-centred design requires involving mariners in the design process to create practical and user-friendly outcomes. Ergonomics is vital in designing work environments onboard ships, prioritising worker productivity, health, comfort, and safety. and effective usable software and systems are vital for supporting critical decisions. The OCEAN project's video, 'The Benefits of Human-Centred Design in Maritime Safety,' is part of a series of free training videos that explore the intricate relationship between ship design, human factors, and maritime safety.
