Expect to see more as the industry settles from the pandemic impacts - both diversification of unproductive assets and in vertical integration. I'm sure many companies are looking at key suppliers that may have become "tall poles in the tent" during supply chain shortages and considering how they bring them in or explore alternatives for risk reduction.

It will be fascinating to see how this all plays out. It's a very sizeable program as the Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) project aims to deliver at least 1,000 aircraft at a price-point in the $25-30M range. So,... it's a $25-30B program with the potential for many more if the program achieves it ambitious goals. In January 2024, the Air Force awarded contracts to five companies - Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Anduril and General Atomics. Then in April, the Air Force made the decision to continue funding Anduril and General Atomics for the first increment leaving the big three wondering what just happened. The interesting analysis here is this line regarding the Skunk Works proposal... "the company’s first-round proposal was too expensive because it was based on an operational analysis that required more stealthy and capable aircraft to survive." The challenge in developing new technologies is often with discarding existing paradigms that have "always worked" in the past. We fall in love with them... at our own peril. In my experience, when the objective has been focused on cheaper and simpler, it's more effective to come at it from the bottom (from simplicity) and incrementally add technology and capabilities to meet the requirements than it is to approach from the top (ie: exquisite & expensive technologies) and then justify discarding all those requirements, capabilities and engineering standards that have made you successful but in reality don't buy their way in to the new solution. That's the hard way to get there and for a large, established company, success with the latter approach often requires creating new, nimble teams with their own autonomy and authority separate from the mothership. Maybe its time for the Lockheed "Fox Den"...?
