Ideas and research are great, but magic happens when they become real-life operations. To do this requires planning, implementation, and funding. A key part of the SBIR/STTR process is planning for the commercialization and future of your solution. This session will cover what you are required to provide for your Phase One and Two submissions, plus provide an overview of planning the implementation and funding of your solution. It will speak to obtaining contracts and other sources of investment, plus identify other resources out there to help you on your journey 

There is an old adage that value is solely in the eyes of the customer. Regardless of how great you think your idea is, it is critical to engage customers and other stakeholders through the entire process, from validating your value proposition and doing your first pilots to landing customers and possibly investors. The feedback you get will lead to better design and outcomes. This session will cover connecting with customers and other stakeholders to validate your value and business model, obtain letters of support, and create the conditions for your idea to move from design to providing value to the world.

NOAA and the Department of Commerce announced $3.9 million in funding to help Small Businesses.

I am very pleased to announce that the OpenSeas Technology Innovation Hub at ODU Institute for Innovation & Entrepreneurship was just awarded a grant by NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration U.s. Integrated Ocean Observing System Program to plan an accelerator program to support businesses developing ocean observation technologies and information services. Data is critical for making decisions and conducting operations around topics ranging from offshore renewable energies and coastal adaptation, to carbon capture and ecosystem monitoring. SBIR/STTR funding, it is imperative that you eventually get your idea to market. By employing lean start-up principles, researchers and entrepreneurs can gauge the potential commercialization interest in their idea and determine how it might need to be refined. This can be utilized to avoid the unnecessary use of resources in product creation and development. This session will provide an overview of the lean start-up process and how to look at the different customer segments for your solutions.
