Naomi Simmons-Thorne, an OCCRL research assistant, discussed at the #forum4excellence24 this morning how to integrate culturally responsive principles into CTE classrooms, career clusters, and pathways. Her colleague Dr. Lorenzo Baber talked about, among other things, why it’s important to infuse culturally relevant pedagogy in campus equity plans in Illinois. Breakout discussions during the “Infusing Culturally Relevant Pedagogy in Campus Equity Plans” session included how attendees are seeing aspects of culturally relevant teachings in their classroom and the success stories. The vibrant discussions to end the talk also included challenges people are seeing in structuring culturally relevant teaching through campus policy and practice as well as strategies to overcome these obstacles.

In our virtual Equity Academy this past July, Marissa Vasquez (Marissa C. V.) took participants through a partial history of California community colleges to demonstrate how the state is working to advance racialized equity at these institutions. Other speakers at the academy—Lorenzo Baber, Maria Wright, Ed.D., and Ayinde Rochon—also discussed their tools and strategies for supporting equitable access for racially minoritized students across higher education contexts. Two-thirds of community college students take classes part time, according to a WFYI Indianapolis article recently published on NPR.org. Often these students must juggle jobs, caregiving, or other obligations that can interrupt their education. OCCRL Director Lorenzo Baber said in the piece, written by Dylan Peers McCoy, that improving transfer success goes beyond what higher education institutions can do and entails investments in social supports. “You could have the best designed programs,” Dr. Baber said, “but that gets rendered meaningless if somebody needs to stop out because they need to take a job to pay the bills of their household.” Though few community college students actually attain a four-year degree, according to the article, discover in McCoy’s piece a transfer policy that could get results.
