Concerns about cybersecurity within the oil and gas sector are higher than ever, driven by geopolitical upheaval around the globe and cybercriminals seeking to extort money. GlobalData analytics show that, despite a 35% decline in mentions of cybersecurity in global oil and gas company filings in Q2 2024 compared to the previous quarter, mentions for the full year will surpass those of 2023 in the next month or two to hit an all-time high. These concerns are not without foundation, with the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre and the White House having both been moved to warn of a growing cyber threat to critical national infrastructure (CNI) organisations. The US continues to be at the forefront of renewable refinery capacity additions by 2028 The country leads globally with the highest renewable production capacity additions of 8,989 million gallons annually by that year. North America’s renewable refinery production capacity is expected to reach 14,355 million gallons per year in 2028, the highest among all regions globally. Europe and Asia follow with 4,717 million gallons per year and 4,284 million gallons per year, respectively. Among countries, the US leads globally with the highest renewable production capacity additions of 8,989 million gallons per year by 2028. Of this, 7,120 million gallons per year capacity is likely to come from new-build projects and the rest of the capacity is from the expansion of existing projects. China to dominate global methanol capacity additions in Asia-Pacific by 2030 China is expected to be at the forefront of methanol capacity additions in Asia-Pacific by 2030. Indonesia and Malaysia follow next in terms of upcoming methanol capacity additions. China continues to dominate the global methanol market both in terms of demand and production. This can be attributed to the fact that methanol offers an ideal solution for China’s clean fuel demand and domestic energy development. Additionally, with the advancement in urbanisation and industrialisation in the country, the need for methanol in various sectors such as construction, packaging, and automotive has increased. The capacity expansion in Indonesia, however, will be driven by rising demand for methanol from solvent and manufacturing industries. The growth of the methanol industry in Malaysia is closely tied to the production and consumption of various downstream chemicals such as formaldehyde, acetic acid, and MTBE. ExxonMobil considers transferring operations of two Malaysian PSCs to PETRONAS Sources said the transfer includes assets such as the Tapis oilfield, which has been in production since 1978. This development follows a report that Exxon had agreed to sell its oil and gas assets in Malaysia, which the company has now clarified as a transfer of operations without any change to its working interest. SK Innovation and SK E&S announce merger to create $72bn asset energy company This move is said to position the combined entity as the largest private energy company in the Asia-Pacific region.  It is a response to the external business environment including economic downturns, sector uncertainty and the electric vehicle market gap. In addition to external expansion, the merger seeks to create synergies in three main areas: improving portfolio competitiveness, bolstering financial and profit frameworks, and ensuring sustained growth momentum.
