About us
Ogallala Commons has grown from a small project into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides leadership and education to reinvigorate communities and commonwealth in the Great Plains Region. Our service area is centered over the High Plains-Ogallala Aquifer (see map and state boundaries to the right), but also extends west into the Rocky Mountains region, and east to the river-braided prairies.

In today’s fast-paced world, it's easy to stay focused on tasks and deadlines. But stepping outside for a walk, planning a hike, or simply sitting on the porch can be just as valuable. Taking a moment to observe wildlife, like deer at the end of the driveway, or to listen to the call of a hawk or the hum of a bee, reminds us of the vital role the natural world plays in our lives. Nature is an essential part of the commonwealth we all share. It’s important to disconnect from our screens and engage with the environment around us. Discover more about the 12 key assets of the commonwealth: ogallalacommons.org/about.

At OC, we take science from the classrooms and bring it to the fields. The Canadian Water Festival is a day-long learning opportunity and field trip for 5th graders who learn about conservation. The message, "water comes from somewhere," is taught through activities, science journals, and games. Local youth act as leaders; the FFA and 4-H organization send teens to help with all of the fun. Because we have been hosting the festival since 2011, many of the teens remember their own 5th grade experience at the Water Festival, bringing the learning and leadership full circle. Join us, Wed, October 9, 8:30am – 2:30pm Canadian Tx https://lnkd.in/g5vjs6uc

The Ogallala Aquifer is a groundwater commonwealth. We share this precious resource with 8 different states, ranging from the Rocky Mountains to the river braided prairies. From Nebraska to Texas, we share water, but our landscapes, our people, and our histories are different. At Ogallala Commons, we celebrate this diversity, because ecology teaches us that diversity equals strength, adaptation, and symbiosis. We work hard to bring community, stewardship, and leadership to support the vibrant and varied landscape that is the Ogallala Commons https://lnkd.in/gtrB5ZtU
