In honor of Veterans Day, Okie Express would like to shine a light on our veterans. ⭐ Brian Blanchard, Army Reserves, VP Operations of Okie Express Auto Wash At 17, Brian joined the Army Reserves to help pay for college. “When asked how long I’d stay, I always responded as long as it makes sense.” 23 years later, Brian shares, “I can absolutely say my military and civilian careers have complimented each other very well, and each has made me better at the other.” Brian’s military career started in maintenance. “Our unit supported the deployment of equipment from Ft Hood into combat zones. That’s where I got my start working with vehicles. My section’s mission was to provide maintenance support to the vehicles being sent out, ensuring they were combat-ready.” Brian’s military career transitioned to Drill Sergeant followed by a First Sergeant (E8). Today, Brian oversees transportation of a specialized truck, called a HET, and is slated to start the Sergeants Major Academy next year. “It’s the balance.” Brian’s response to his greatest challenge over these years. “When folks come from active duty and transition into the reserves, they look at it as “easy” being one weekend per month, two weeks per year. The Army reserves achieve all the same standards as active duty in a shorter period. It becomes quite difficult! I’ve missed family and friends’ events, weddings, birthdays, and deaths in the family due to my military obligation.” “I’m fortunate to have both careers line up well, promoting into roles of greater responsibility at times complimenting each other.” Brian expanded, “The roles are very similar. To develop a high-functioning team and drive process execution to accomplish our mission and goals.” “The military can make a positive impact in your life as well as money for college.” Brian recognizes challenges faced by those transitioning to civilian work forces. “It can be very scary for military folks. I often see people struggle to translate what they’ve accomplished in the military to be understandable in the civilian world. Focus on how to communicate those skills to potential future employers.” In speaking of what Veterans Day means to him, Brian shared, “About 1% of the US population serves in the military between all branches. Those folks volunteer to defend our great nation and potentially make the ultimate sacrifice. We don’t generally ask for recognition. As this country becomes more divided, it can be hard to remember why we make that sacrifice. Thank any Veterans you see. It means a ton to us.” We thank Brian for his service and for being part of our Okie Express Auto Wash team.👏 Thank you to all our Veterans.
