Our Brand New precast/prestressed concrete management course at TXST- Concrete Industry Management took its first plant tour of the semester to Oldcastle Infrastructure Buda TX this morning for an overview of plant operations and products. This new course is supported by grants from the NPCA Foundation and PCI Foundation and will include a hands-on lab component so we’re excited to see how the pros do it! The WSJ article about the water scarcity situation in Kyle, Texas makes for sobering reading. This is far from an isolated case—population growth is placing additional demands on already stressed water supplies all over the country. With water scarcity there are only a few levers we can pull: take less water out of the ground, put more water back into the ground, and use water more efficiently. Regarding the latter, I can’t help but wonder how much non-revenue water is being lost to leakage in and around Kyle—water infrastructure is aging all across the US, and we leak an estimated 6 billion gallons of treated drinking water every day. Loss due to leakage is a critical issue, but there are cost-effective ways to address it. Logically, the first step should always be to locate and fix the leaks. If you work for a municipality that’s concerned about non-revenue water loss, please reach out—my team and I have technology that can help you pinpoint your leaks, enabling you to fix them quickly and reverse that water loss.
