Hurricane Helene has devastated parts of the southeastern United States, especially northwestern North Carolina, northwestern South Carolina and eastern Georgia. We are keeping all the YMCAs affected in those regions, your staff, and your communities in our thoughts and prayers. ❤️ If you want to help, there are a few immediate ways to do so: Contribute to the Employee Assistance Fund, which provides financial aid to Y staff in need after natural disasters and other crises. Staff who have been impacted can apply for support at this same link https://bit.ly/4dyxsq6 Donate to the Hurricane Helene Relief Fund. Y-USA has created this centralized relief fund and will work with Alliance leaders to distribute donations to YMCA associations that need them most, to aid near-term efforts to get damaged facilities back up and running and to support long-term recovery. https://bit.ly/3N75s2c

Hispanic Heritage Month began on September 15 and runs through October 15, giving us an opportunity to recognize and celebrate members of our communities and their ancestors who hail from Mexico, parts of the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. Rather than starting at the beginning of September, Hispanic Heritage Month takes place over 30 days starting on the 15th, a nod to the anniversaries of national independence for a number of Latin American countries including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Most Hispanic and Latino communities recognize September 15 as the date of their independence; however, Mexico’s independence is celebrated on September 16 and Chile celebrates its independence on September 18.

Let us come together to celebrate our shared humanity and commit to building bridges. Welcoming our new neighbors is not just an act of kindness; it is an investment in the future of our community. At the Y, we are proud to lead this charge, ensuring that the Olympic Peninsula remains a place where everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to thrive.
