We must take steps now to scale public options, increase access to AI tools, and invest directly in socially beneficial AI models 🦾 Thanks to our partners at Center for Responsible AI at NYU and National Science Foundation (NSF) for allowing us to be apart of this important discussion. This workshop was a pivotal step to addressing the barriers to entry for innovators, civil society, and researchers alike. We are proud to support projects like the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource Pilot and their work to create publicly available datasets and increase access to compute.
On July 29-31, Julia Stoyanovich, Institute Associate Professor at NYU Tandon, Associate Professor at NYU Center for Data Science, and director of the Center for Responsible AI at NYU, organized an in-person workshop that brought together leading experts in the cyberinfrastructure and AI policy / governance / responsible AI communities. Participants provided feedback regarding priorities, policies, and best practices for the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR), with a focus on improving the trustworthiness of the resource and on democratizing access. This workshop was supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and by Omidyar Network. If you are wondering about some of the thinking behind Omidyar Network's recently announced strategy evolution, please see this excellent piece from Inside Philanthropy. From the article: "For the previous 30 years, Americans navigated a digital Wild West lacking the kinds of checks on power that we take for granted in other aspects of our lives. But the explosion of generative AI has given funders, policymakers and tech companies a rare opportunity to create a digital technology landscape governed by consensus rather than chaos. "With every other technology, we’ve eventually decided on what we want it for. We haven’t gotten to that stage with (digital) tech, and it’s time to get there." #responsibletech #mikescutari Michele Lawrence Jawando Anamitra Deb Beth Kanter Annie Maxwell Sonny Bardhan Govind Shivkumar https://lnkd.in/emKFwKgJ
💬 "The conversation about AI opened a window that isn’t going to be open forever, and we have an opportunity to have a conversation as a society about what we want tech to do for us." That's why we are evolving our strategy, with a renewed focus on bending the arc of the digital revolution toward shared power, prosperity, and possibility. Our CEO Michael Kubzansky celebrated recent wins for a safer and more fair digital future and shared our vision for steering digital tech toward humanity’s shared interests in the latest piece in Inside Philanthropy👇 https://lnkd.in/gWjaZ9KW

A historic decision by the DC District Court has found Google guilty of monopolistic practices in internet searches and online advertising. This ruling is a pivotal moment for digital market competition and consumer choice. Assistant Attorney General Jonathan Kanter hails it as paving "the path for innovation for generations." The ruling is a crucial step towards ensuring an open, competitive digital marketplace. We applaud the DOJ Antitrust Division for this significant victory. It reflects our 2020 policy paper "Roadmap for a Monopolization Case Against Google Regarding the Search Market" (https://lnkd.in/eribEtr2) and reaffirms our commitment to fair competition and innovation in the digital economy. This ruling promises a future with: ⚖ More equitable access to information 🏢 Increased opportunities for new businesses 🛒 Enhanced consumer choices 💡 A healthier, more innovative digital ecosystem Read our full statement here: https://lnkd.in/eQuqpvCC What's your view on this ruling's potential impact on the tech industry and innovation? #AntitrustLaw #DigitalCompetition #TechIndustry #ConsumerChoice #Innovation
