🛜 Wireless Update: Part 4 of 4 (UWB) Within the rapidly evolving world of wireless, technology innovation is everywhere. In this 4-part series, we take a quick look at what’s happening in: Cellular 📶, Bluetooth, WiFi 🛜, and UWB. Wireless Update Part 4: UWB – 802.15.4z and beyond ✅ This technology was first standardized in the mid-2000s, though it wasn’t until 2019 that Apple put it once more into the spotlight, where market adoption is growing rapidly. UWB, known by its regulatory requirement as needing to cover minimally 500MHz in bandwidth, operates in the noise floor where unintentionally emissions occur, at -41.3dBm/MHz. ✅ The first standardized version of UWB emerged in 802.15.3a and was set to offer 480Mbps cable replacement for Wireless USB. However, the industry didn’t end up wanting this OFDM-based solution which would have delivered a wireless version of USB, rather interest centered on IPv6 based connections. ✅ The other UWB technology went down a more traditional impulse radio path and was standardized initially as 802.15.4a. Through continual improvements, the new spec emerged as 802.15.4z and this was adopted pervasively across the industry, optimized for distance measurement down to 1cm accuracy. A key use case for this technology is known as Phone as a Key (PaaK) for digital key applications in automotive. The pervasive adoption by mobile handset manufacturers, initially just Apple but now growing, opens up serious possibilities. ✅ Like all things, evolution is ongoing in the form of 802.15.4ab expanding the capabilities of the technology to include distance ranging, radar and data communications. Aspects of this new specification are rumored to be included in Apple’s latest devices using the U2 chipset. Qualcomm made news earlier this year too by introduce a tri-radio solution for mobile, including Bluetooth, WiFi and UWB ✅ Industry organizations involved in UWB include: Car Connectivity Consortium for digital key, FiRA for ranging applications in IoT, the UWB Alliance, and more recently an SAE audio committee looking at uncompressed wireless audio transfer.
