Driving Change in Early Childhood and K12 Education

I love this kid. ❤️ Personality for days! His shirt says it all. Our Scholars want to see you and be seen BY YOU. Come see us! 😊 Our little guy is flexing his leadership muscles and getting ready to take our places when he’s an adult. Gotta love him and his 500+ peers that now get their education at One City Schools. They all want to be super heroes, in our eyes. 😍🙏🏾

Driving Change in Early Childhood and K12 Education

It was a honor to be here in California with longtime friends, colleagues, and supporters to attend the Celebration of Life of this amazing man, Don Shalvey. Please read the article below about him. I first met Don through Dr. Howard Fuller in 2001 and formed an immediate connection that led to numerous phone calls with me seeking his advice and counsel. I loved talking with the man. I was the young CEO of a national organization founded by Dr. Howard Fuller and was seeking out mentors. Don became one for me. I only wish I had taken him up on his offer to come ride horses with him in California many moons ago. When I stepped away from education briefly to work for Target Corporation and after that, lead the Urban League of Greater Madison, I fell out of touch with Don and many of my colleagues working on education reform nationally. I am happy I got to talk with Don in the year before he passed. He was still the same affable and inspiring source of inspiration and reflection who reminded me that the work we do is hard, but that our children need us to stay the course. During my last conversation with Don, he said, "They (children) cannot transform public education for themselves; they need us to do that for them. You have always been the right one for the job, Kaleem, and I am glad you found your way back to your mission. The work is hard and it will always be hard, but stay the course. The positive impact you are having on the lives of the children you educate and are advocating for, and the communities where they will live in the future, will be felt for generations." Thank you, Don. BTW, the woman who served me breakfast yesterday raved about the positive impact your schools have had on her granddaughter, who has taken college courses in high school and is applying to colleges this year. She said Aspire schools are the best in the Stockton area, and that she wished she could thank you in person. I am doing that for her here. God bless your beautiful spirit. You will never be forgotten. Onward. 🙂

Had the opportunity to join hundreds of others in Milwaukee tonight to celebrate my mentor, Dr. Howard Fuller and his team members and Scholars at the new facility of the Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy. This man right here opened a door for me, chose me as the founding president of the national organization that we did big things with more than 20 years ago, and got me deeply involved with education reform on a national level. I wouldn’t be where I am today without this extraordinary leader taking me under his wing. I will forever be appreciative of his mentorship and support. He is still supporting and partnering with me in the work. It was also great to see Wanda Montgomery, Cory and Michelle Nettles, Bill Oberndorf, Miata Fuller, Judith Romelus, Gerard Robinson, Barato Britt, Ryan Zerwer, Abby Schumwinger, Rodney Lynk, Jr., Mayrice Thomas, and many other wonderful people that have been a part of my leadership journey, and some that I have not seen in a very long time. Felt great to be here tonight. 🙏🏾❤️

Driving Change in Early Childhood and K12 Education

SCHOOL CULTURE: The 2024-25 school year at One City Schools is off to another great start. I love seeing how our educators connect with our young Scholars. During the first week of school, I saw a young man who is new to our middle school being defiant with one of his teachers and refusing to go to class while his teacher patiently listened to him. I stopped and listened as well, and chatted with the young man. He was having a hard time adjusting to his new school. He said his mother wanted him to be there but he wanted to be at his old school. After a minute or so of talking with him, he calmed down and agreed to try following the plans and routines that his new teachers were laying out. Last night, as I was walking into our parent meeting for our elementary and middle schools, the young man stopped me to talk with him. He had a huge smile on his face as he told me how much he liked school now and that he was sorry for how he was acting when I first met him. He is now feeling a sense of community with his classmates and really likes his teachers, our education program, and the structure provided by our school. I couldn’t talk too long because I had to talk with our parents, but it felt great to see the joy on his face and hear him talk about being happy being in school. The culture of joy, connection, and high expectations that our school leaders, educators, and support staff establish with our Scholars at our schools is beautiful to see, feel, and experience.

One City Parents and Friends! Please consider bringing your child out to Penn Park this Saturday, August 17th, when rising NBA star and Sun Prairie, Wisconsin native, Jalen Johnson and his new Foundation host their first Black Party and Basketball tournament. Details are below. It will be a very special day. We look forward to welcoming our native son, and future NBA All-Star, back home. Jalen closed out the 2024-25 NBA season as a starting Small Forward for the Atlanta Hawks. He was the fourth leading scorer (16.0 pts/game) and second leading rebounder (8.7 rebounds/game) for the Hawks. To learn more about Jalen, visit https://lnkd.in/gpMCRKpk. Special Note: Jalen started his high school basketball career playing for Sun Prairie High School, where as a sophomore in 2018, he and Marlon Ruffin (the son of One City's very own Ms. Marilyn Ruffin and now a professional basketball star playing in Europe), led Sun Prairie to its first-ever Wisconsin State Championship appearance. Jalen then transferred to Nicole High School near Milwaukee where he and his younger brother Kobe Johnson led their team to the state championship in 2019. When Jalen graduated, he was the #2 ranked high school basketball player at his position in the United States. Another Note: Kobe Johnson is currently a college men's basketball star playing the guard position for UCLA. Kobe and Jalen's older brother, Rod Johnson, Jr. played Division-1 basketball for Chattanooga. Their father Rod Johnson, Sr. and mother Stacey both played Division-1 basketball for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

It has been great to see our One City Schools families utilizing our Summit Credit Union branch. It's the first (limited service) credit union, that we are aware of, that is located in an elementary and middle school facility in the USA. Seeing Dante opening his first bank account today was priceless. We are looking forward to doing more with Summit during the 2024-25 school year, and beyond!
