I had the pleasure of working with a small surgery center that has a lot of totals being processed out of an SPD that is the size of a coat room with only 1 sterilizer. Needless to say, they have numerous challenges with 15 orthopedic total procedures and they needed an answer. The solution to creating dynamic efficiency using ONE TRAY to remove the dry and cool time will yield over an hour and a half savings. This is going to drastically change their totals sterilization process and lessen their need for more instrumentation for various specialties.

Barbara Ann Harmer, MHA, BSN, RN was one of three experienced nurses who shared their thoughts and experiences on accountability for managers and staff at the American Academy of Ophthalmology national meeting in Chicago, IL. After a brief introduction, there was a panel discussion and the floor was opened for a sharing of experiences and questions from the attendees. Toxic Anterior Segment Syndrome (TASS) still exists and poses a threat if steps are not taken to mitigate the risk of it occurring. As one of the clinical investigators of TASS, Barbara's presentation compared the differences between TASS and endophthalmitis and discussed the etiology of TASS. Preventative measures with instrument cleaning and sterilization procedures to prevent TASS was also described. The effects of water quality on instrument reprocessing was another highlight of this presentation. Scott Firsdon and I had a great day implementing ONE TRAY and EZ TRAX in Massachusetts yesterday! The real benefit to a growing Orthopedic Volume will be ONE TRAY cutting off over 2 hours of processing time. But EZ TRAX has reduced the Stryker Knee to 2 trays instead of 6 and the Hip System 6 trays to 3! It's an around win for everyone.
