Last week, Kevin J. Patel and Saiarchana Darira (She/Her) hosted an event in partnership with the U.S. Department of State at the Arizona State University Pavilion at the United Nations COP28. This event served as a roundtable discussion between the US Consul General of Dubai and youth climate activists across the world, allowing the activists to share their hopes for the climate negotiations. Our goal is to continue to find ways to bridge the gap between youth and world leaders. Follow along with us on our journey.

Kevin Patel is a champion for intersectional climate justice. Through his work with One Up Action, Kevin Patel collaborated with the community to create the first-of-its-kind Youth Climate Commission in LA County to amplify youth voices on the climate crisis. Kevin believes that the youth "… are the Leaders of Today. One of the most important lessons I've learned is that you can never give up in the face of an obstacle." A few months ago, I had the distinct privilege of delivering the keynote at the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens’ first annual Youth Conservation Symposium. Standing before a room full of passionate young leaders, I shared a message that resonates deeply with me: “The reality is, when we support conservation efforts, we are ultimately working to save our own species.” As I addressed the incredible Teen Council for Conservation, I underscored the vital role they play in shaping a future that is not just sustainable but also equitable and just. I reminded everyone of an Indigenous proverb that perfectly encapsulates our responsibility: “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children,” This powerful truth guides our work in conservation, reminding us that the actions we take today will shape the world for future generations. Along with emphasizing the urgency of our mission to restore ecosystems and build a regenerative world. This symposium was more than just a gathering—it was a call to action for all of us to support Indigenous youth, amplify marginalized voices, and take concrete steps towards a future where nature and humanity can thrive together. Let’s continue to lead with purpose and passion, ensuring that our actions today secure a better tomorrow for all. Exciting times ahead as I return to New York for Climate Week NYC and #UNGA79! As the Founder of OneUpAction International and Co-Founder of the soon-to-launch Youth Impact Council, I am more committed than ever to driving the change our planet so desperately needs. Over the past 15 years in the climate movement, I’ve witnessed the power of youth-led action to catalyze global shifts toward a more sustainable and just future. From pioneering efforts with OneUpAction to collaborating with world leaders and major organizations, I’ve seen firsthand how young people are not just participants but leaders in shaping climate solutions. This year, I’m not only looking forward to attending impactful events and discussions but also eager to learn, connect, and build on the momentum we’ve created.
