Techs tales from the Silicon Valley. It was in the early 2010s. I took a new position and on my first day, a physical pager was given to me. I said, “Reminds me of the 90s. Are you sure there isn’t an app for this?” I was told, “If you find one, let us know.” I go looking in the App Store and found several pager apps. I tried a few and I concluded that they were all just toys. They weren’t feasible for a critical enterprise production system like ours. I gave up looking but carrying this physical pager with me another week motivated me to keep looking. This time, I found onpage. Reading the marketing materials, I saw that this is an app for Doctors. I tested it right away and to my surprise, it worked flawlessly and it met all my requirements. * reliable enough for Doctors meant reliable enough for critical enterprise systems like ours * extremely easy to implement with virtually zero learning curve * extremely cost effective I sold it to my boss and team. We went live that weekend. Unfortunately, we had a faulty Nagios alert and hundreds of pages were sent. The following week, Judit Sharon from onpage wanted to talk to me. I was a bit nervous actually. I thought I was in trouble. After all, we were not Doctors and we weren’t using the onpage service as designed. I was expecting her to tell me to stop using it. Although, I was prepared to beg her to let us continue using it as it was the perfect solution. We spoke and she wanted to know why we were getting so many pages. I explained our use case and to my surprise, she didn’t shut us down. Instead, she added IT alerting to the product offering.
