We're excited to introduce our first piece of research dedicated to exploring Early Riders themes: Every Company is a Bitcoin Miner by Onramp CSO and Partner at Early Riders, Brian Cubellis. While Bitcoin mining has been predominantly associated with specialized mining firms investing heavily in computational power and energy resources, a compelling argument suggests that every company, regardless of its industry, has the potential to function as a Bitcoin miner. This report explores the thesis that businesses with robust free cash flows and sustainable competitive advantages are better positioned to accumulate Bitcoin than traditional mining operations. If Apple began allocating 1% of their free cash flows into Bitcoin in 2020, their balance sheet would have over 160K BTC today. We see the Bitcoin treasury strategy as a golden opportunity for cash flowing companies to save a percentage of their earnings in hard money and become more efficient Bitcoin miners than dedicated Bitcoin mining businesses themselves. The concept that every company is a Bitcoin miner challenges traditional perceptions of both mining and corporate finance, but it also improves the balance sheet of every enterprise. Businesses with defensible moats can leverage their sustainable free cash flows, operational efficiencies, and strategic flexibility to effectively 'mine' Bitcoin more efficiently than traditional miners. Meanwhile, companies in transition that are currently cash flow negative can also 'mine' Bitcoin by acquiring it as a treasury reserve asset, and accepting Bitcoin as payment, which will extend their runway until they are able establish a long-term cash flowing business model. Embracing this philosophy not only positions companies to capitalize on the potential growth of Bitcoin but also fosters innovation and resilience in an increasingly digital economy.
