Back in the summer of 2022, onX hosted a Symposium called Shared Ground. We invited partners, athletes, land managers, and experts from all of our user groups to join us in Bozeman for 3 days. We led keynotes, panels, trail work, and workshops that helped everyone come together, breakdown barriers and stigmas, and celebrate commonality. The very last session of the Symposium asked our guests to get together in small groups and come up with an actual project that could help solve a problem in the outdoor recreation world today. We closed the Symposium offering to fund these projects, which we did, as pitches and projects formalized in the months following. One group consisted of folks from Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, One Montana, and Outdoor Life. Their idea was to dig into the common friction between landowners and hunters regarding access to elk. They wanted to bring a story to life that suggests how compromise and moderate voices can work together to find sustainable solutions that serve both stakeholders. Way up in the Northwoods of Minnesota, lies the wild and overgrown Pine Island BMA. Access was tough and deer habitat less than stellar. onX teamed up with Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters to get to work. The project was funded by an onX Adventure Grant and executed by 50+ sportsmen and women who donated a day of time. The project involved installing signage, daylighting old growth, planting 1000 new trees to support deer habitat, cleared trails (loose term), signed boundary lines, and more. The onX Adventure Forever Grants aim to get more access on the ground and more stewardship projects in motion to retain that access. In California, following devastating fires and storm damage, a group of trail builders known as the Sage Trails Alliance banded together to clear over 10 miles of singletrack uncovering 7,000 feet of descent in Pine Mountain in California.
