About us

We are thrilled to see one of our former interns and current volunteers had the opportunity to attend the Auburn University Government & Economic Development Institute intensive course last week! We look forward to seeing what they accomplish with this new information.
Main Street Alabama takes GEDI! I was so happy to be able to work hand in hand with some of my fellow Main Street associates during this week's Auburn University Government & Economic Development Institute course. Ted Choi, who I worked closely with during his time as an intern at Opelika Main Street (where I frequently volunteer) and Haley Greene, who I had the pleasure meeting during this class, and is the Executive Director of Main Street Wetumpka. We were assigned a group to work a case study together throughout the week and made up the fictional Lake City Community Development/Parks and Recreation Team. As the executive director for LCCD, I spoke briefly on behalf of our community incentives that we were offering to a prospective company, that was looking to build a plant and produce e-bikes, that would mostly be geared towards police departments The company was made up of five panelists and, out of three groups, they ultimately chose our city as the winners. Our incentives were one of the four things that the prospective company helped to sway them (along with our Mayor being at the meeting, our site and how fast they could get up and running, and how inexpensive it would be for them overall). Small shout out to Jonathan Woodard as well (not pictured), who actually works for the Opelika Economic Development, who was also on our team, and who we, as the Community Development office, worked closely with to plan out our incentives. Whereas Ted, Haley and I worked on community incentives (five year paid membership to our golf and country clubs, complimentary entry to our State Park, membership with the Lake City Downtown Association, box seats at our local theatre, etc), Johnathan took the lead on tax abatements, college training grants, providing utility infrastructure, and grants for site development. Lake City GEDI '24, for the win!
