Wildfires in the Brazilian Amazon have just reached a 14-year high, following extreme drought across the region. ⚠ In August alone, over 38,000 fire hotspots were reported by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), with nearly 54,000 wildfire outbreaks recorded since the start of this year – up 80% on the same period last year. These record-breaking fires pose unprecedented challenges for local communities and wildlife, as well as the global climate. Vital nature and vegetation has been decimated, while toxic smoke has spread across 11 states, with health implications for people across Brazil. Urgent action is needed on an international scale to protect the Amazon and the communities that depend on it. This Thursday (5th September) is Amazon Day – a key opportunity to highlight these challenges and call for change. Our library offers world-class visuals for new storytelling about the Amazon, including powerful shots of wildfires. This inspiring short film by Wildlife Conservation Society-India showcases collaborative efforts to protect the city’s vulnerable wetlands and biodiversity through the Mumbai Jackal Project. We’re proud to support this film with striking visuals by Bullhorn Pictures, Nature Candid Productions and SILVERBACK FILMS. 📽 Wildlife filmmaker and editor Akhilesh Tambe used footage from the #OpenPlanet library to supplement new filming and interviews, sharing: "I really appreciate your help in making some amazing rushes available for research and science communication. Restoring our world for people and nature 🤝 By 2070, the overlap between human and wildlife populations is expected to increase across 57% of the Earth’s land. Crowded landscapes could mean a higher risk of biodiversity loss and disease transmission, among other major challenges. As we build a more sustainable, equitable future for all, it’s critical the issues facing people, nature and climate are addressed together. These interconnected themes are the focus of our library, helping to document and share the story of our changing planet. If you’re looking for visual content to support your campaigns and communications on the planetary crisis – from wildlife conservation to human health and climate change – head to our library: www.openplanet.org. 🎥 SILVERBACK FILMS - Cheetah cubs play in the Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya. #OpenPlanet

How can we protect our cities from flooding? Last week, it was reported that India will spend $300 million (USD) in two years to help mitigate floods and conserve water across seven major cities, including Bengaluru. Bengaluru was once known as ‘The City of a Thousand Lakes’. But rapid urbanisation has led to a drastic reduction in lakes and water bodies, leaving rainwater nowhere to go during monsoon season. Through our network of filmmakers and contributors, we’ve gathered high-quality footage showing the impacts of extreme flooding on the city of Bengaluru, as well as restoration efforts underway to revive its ancient lakes – supporting local communities and reconnecting people with nature. Svalbard: on the frontline of the climate crisis. ⚠ The Svalbard archipelago in Norway is one of the fastest-warming places on earth. Over half its land is covered by ice, which is suffering extreme and rapid melting episodes during summer months. In late July and early August 2024, temperatures hovered around 4°C above average for the region. This exceptional heat resulted in Svalbard’s ice caps breaking their all-time record for daily surface melt, at a rate five times larger than normal. This unprecedented ice-melt highlights the need for urgent climate action – to secure a stable future for Svalbard, and for our planet. 🌍 Explore footage of Arctic glaciers and wildlife in Svalbard to support your storytelling: https://lnkd.in/ekJugV9i 🎥 SILVERBACK FILMS - Drift ice with a cavity floats in Arctic waters in Svalbard. #OpenPlanet #StoriesForChange #climateaction
