We make open-source tools for neuroscience & biosensing

About us

OpenBCI stands for open-source brain-computer interface (BCI). Anyone with a computer can use OpenBCI tools to sample physiological data from their body. For over a decade, OpenBCI has led the world in developing hardware and software for accessible neurotechnology. Galea, OpenBCI’s latest product, is an enterprise, multi-modal biosensing headset designed to interface with the human mind. It combines high-fidelity AR/VR/XR display technology with the most comprehensive bio-sensing headwear ever made commercially available. Novel BCI hardware and artificial intelligence are key to OpenBCI's effort to turn the ocean of human physiological data into meaningful insights.

“A powerful new tool for augmenting your mind and body” See Conor Russomanno and Christian Bayerlein use Galea to fly a drone over the TED audience. OpenBCI’s TED Talk is now LIVE. The software used to fly the drone has been made available free and open source (link in comments) so others can recreate and improve on our demonstration. We believe Christian’s closing statement best summarizes the opportunities of this technology: “Despite my disability, I'm a very happy and fulfilled person. What truly hurts holds me back, are not my physical limitations, it's rather the barriers in the environment. I'm a technologist and political activist. I believe that technology can empower disabled people. It can help create a better, more inclusive and accessible world for everyone. This demonstration is a perfect example. We saw what's possible when cutting edge technology is combined with human curiosity and creativity. So let's build tools that empower people, applications that break down barriers, systems that unlock a world of possibilities. I think that's an idea worth spreading.” And fellow TED2023 speaker Nita Farahany's talk on cognitive liberty immediately before ours lays out the profound risks and importance of getting this technology right. OpenBCI’s mission is to lower the barrier to entry for brain-computer interfacing, while ensuring that these technologies are adopted into the consumer landscape in an ethical way that protects user agency and mental health. Special thanks to the organizations who made this demonstration possible: Lenovo Workstations Varjo Formlabs Watch Conor’s talk for the story on how OpenBCI started this mission, and where we are going from here. #openbci #neurotechnology #neurotech #TED #TED2023 #braincomputerinterface

Get an inside look at Galea's R&D process 🛠️, up-close-and-personal with the OpenBCI team 🔍 At OpenBCI's HQ, we integrate state-of-the-art #neurotechnology with artificial intelligence and wearable computing. To process Galea's multi-modal data, we rely on Lenovo Workstations high-performance hardware 🖥️. Today, OpenBCI uses powerful Thinkstation workstations to collect, analyze, and process data and train #AI models, leading to increased agility for developing projects like #NeuroFly 🚀 Galea's high-fidelity EXG sensors collect an immense amount of information. AI is a key piece in our effort to turn this ocean of physiological data into meaningful insights. galea.co ↗ Full 3-min video on Lenovo's YouTube: https://lnkd.in/e5cVDr4h

CNN's Anna Stewart stopped by OpenBCI's office for a #neurotechnology demo 👩🏼💻 She sat down with Joseph Artuso to discuss the present and future of non-invasive #BCI. We were thrilled to host her at our prototyping space and share what we built. Catch the highlights in CNN Decoded, 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁! ➡️ Full episode: https://lnkd.in/gcnFBJzF OpenBCI's segment starts at 18:33 #Galea, pictured, has a range of custom biosensors embedded in a VR headset. The device non-invasively samples bio-electric data and helps people understand the black box that is the human brain🧠 Currently, Galea is used across a range of industries, from gaming to cognitive health to workplace training. 👀 A sneak peek of our Galea demo: Synesthesia room. This demo immerses the user into a VR landscape that uses EEG data to change the visuals and audio around them, consequently providing real-time feedback about the state of the user's brain. Watch as the user in the video closes their eyes which prompts the alpha brainwave (associated with relaxation) to spike.

Trying to get more sleep? Evidence supports a "sweet spot" for the number of hours 💤 🔍 Sleep quality and cognition have a well-established correlation. Large studies, like the English Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSA), consistently find an 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝗨-𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗱 association between sleep quality and cognition, in which those who slept 4 hours or less and 10 hours or more had worse cognition and faster decline in global cognitive function and memory. Technologist Amir Bozorgzadeh and our friends at Virtuleap confirmed this fascinating finding. Using their virtual reality brain training app, Enhance VR, they took a look under the hood of 3,361 VR brain trainers' gameplay data, to quantify the relationship between quality of sleep and cognitive performance. They found the same inverted U-shaped association in those who sleep less than 7 hours across all cognitive categories! Players that sleep 7–8 hours generally performed better on attention and memory games. Looking for further reading?
