The journey continued in Brussels on Friday with a day full of presentations, meetings, tours.... and birthday celebrations! As we heard from our European counterparts, the group began to recognize a growing theme across the presentations: the interplay of regulation, innovation, and collaboration: 🤝European mobility leaders have fostered a culture of collaboration as well as a recognition that sharing information can fuel industry and civic innovation. 💡 Innovation has pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in Europe, often challenging existing regulations and requiring them to evolve. Our presenters impressed upon us that this process - innovate, test, learn, innovate - is not a bad thing and industry is eager to pilot in partnership with government to find more efficient and impactful ways to do business. 🛑 Regulation in Europe serves as a catalyst for collaboration, ensuring that industry innovation is guided by and aligned with policy goals and outcomes. Finally, our day ended by celebrating THREE presenters and participants who all shared the same birthday. Happy Birthday to our new friends! Now, off to The Netherlands! 💡 Great insights from Michael Schnuerle at the Center of Excellence on New Mobility and Automated Vehicles! He highlighted how cities can leverage the Mobility Data Specification (MDS) to manage connected vehicles for safer, more equitable mobility. 👇 #MDS #MobilityInnovation
At the Center of Excellence on New Mobility and Automated Vehicles I was able to present on how cities can use Open Mobility Foundation's Mobility Data Specification (MDS) to manage connected autonomous vehicles, robotaxis, taxis, Uber, and Lyft in the public right of way for safer, more reliable, and more equitable operations. I shared some good examples of how cities like LADOT and Seattle Department of Transportation and other global cities are using MDS for this already. In attendance at this MetroLab Network event were participants from the Federal Highway Administration, U.S. Department of Transportation, NACTO (National Association of City Transportation Officials), UCLA Institute of Transportation Studies, Carnegie Mellon University, and other OMF members and cities like INRIX, City of Austin, District Department of Transportation (DDOT), City of Alexandria, Virginia, and San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA). Here are my slides if you would like to see the details and the topics covered. https://lnkd.in/ejqWYPJ7 I also got to learn from other amazing people from these organizations like Kristin White, Stephanie Dock, AICP, Armand Shahbazian, MPA, Rachel C., Hillary Orr, and Kate Garman Burns!

Our tour of Paris continued on Thursday with a showcase of an innovative JCDecaux program utilizing CityQ - Downsizing a car into a tech ebike vehicles to support JCDecaux's maintenance activities throughout the Ville de Paris. Vehicles like this make zero emission delivery zones possible, greatly supporting efforts to reduce congestion and emissions, while advancing last mile delivery options that support small business and economic development in center cities. Later in the afternoon, philippe crist helped our city representatives understand the evolution of bicycle infrastructure over the last 20+ years in Paris, culminating in the buildout of 700 kilometers of bike lanes during the initial COVID lockdowns in 2020. When the plan was initially developed, the city envisioned for this network to be built over 15 years but instead utilized the opportunity presented by the COVID pandemic to advance the vision in only two months. Finally, our long day of touring infrastructure and facilities concluded with visits at two urban logistics facilities - one quite small in a former underground parking facility and another on the edge of the city, adjacent to a railyard. On Friday, we will continue our tour briefly in Brussels with POLIS Network, the European Commission and DHL and Louise Duprez and then off to Utrecht! Cityfi Evan Corey Costagliola

Paris - a world leader in creating policies and regulations aimed at reducing automobile emissions - has had a Low Emission Zone for nearly 10 years. Since the first zone was set up in 2015, Paris' urban logistics eco system has evolved and now the city has implemented a number of low emission delivery zone programs. On the first full day on our 10-day SMART Collaborative Zero Emission Delivery and Urban Freight Logistics European Study Tour, our participants spent time hearing from several officials, including representatives from the City of Paris, La Poste Groupe and OMF Member, Urban Radar, about the various policies and initiatives Paris has implemented to reduce carbon emissions related to urban delivery (or, urban “logistics” as our European colleagues call it). Much of this activity takes place at the curbs and a number of our member cities are implementing their own curb management programs via the USDOT’s SMART grant program and the OMF’s SMART Curb Collaborative. They will utilize these learnings to develop and grow their programs. Later in the afternoon, we had a chance to witness urban logistics in action and visited an Amazon cyclelogistics hub along the Seine in Central Paris. We are so thankful for all of Wednesday’s speakers and looking forward to continued collaboration.

🤝👇Perhaps “MOST” importantly, the study tour will engender ongoing and long-term collaboration and exchange between leading American and European cities on the topic of zero emission zones and logistics.
🛣️ Here we go! Today we officially started our 10-day SMART Collaborative Zero Emission Delivery and Urban Freight Logistics European Study Tour! With the Open Mobility Foundation, we are hosting representatives from Portland, San Jose, Minneapolis and Miami-Dade County on a study tour as part of the OMF's SMART Curb Collaborative. The study tour will cover topics such as: ⚙️ mobility & freight hubs 🏙️ urban consolidation centers 🚚 last-mile delivery vehicles and logistics ⚡ electrification and fleet replacement of fleets ♻️ zero- and ultra-low emission zones 📱 digital infrastructure (including digital twins, data specifications, among others) 📜 new regulations from local governments and/or the European Union. More importantly, the study tour will engender ongoing and long-term collaboration and exchange between leading American and European cities on the topic of zero emission zones and logistics. Special thanks to Senior Principal Evan Corey Costagliola, Cityfi Affiliate Gemma Schepers, and OMF Superstar Aylene McCallum for leading the way on this adventure. I am *more than* delighted to be spending the next ten days in Paris, Brussels, Eindhoven, and Amsterdam leading four US cities on a study tour to learn about last mile and zero emissions delivery tools. These types of shared learning experiences help city leaders deepen their understanding of innovative transportation tools and empower those leaders to take quicker and more definitive action on industry leading technologies that can deliver real climate policy impacts (pun intended!). Stay tuned over the next two weeks as I share learnings and insights from our experience! Open Mobility Foundation Cityfi
