We recently posted an example of high data compression of data achieved by OpenObserve, and after seeing that, a customer shared the screenshot below from their OpenObserve installation. In this case, 64x compression of data was achieved. Storing 110 TB of ingested data costs just $41. This is a screenshot of OpenObserve app home page from one of our development installations. In this instance, we achieved 46x compression for all telemetry data (Logs, Metrics, Traces) collectively. There is no bifurcation of cold or hot-tier storage. Everything is stored on s3 and is treated as hot-tier. Your storage cost for 30 TB of ingested data, in this case is just $16.

One of the biggest challenges in observability is preprocessing the telemetry data (logs, metrics, traces, etc) that is sent by telemetry forwarders like (fluentbit, otel-collector, vector etc.). e.g. 66.249.65.159 - - [06/Nov/2014:19:10:38 +0600] "GET /news/53f8d72920ba2744fe873ebc.html HTTP/1.1" 404 177 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 6_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/536.26 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/6.0 Mobile/10A5376e Safari/8536.25 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +https://lnkd.in/eHGXq7x)" The above log line is not really very useful for analysis. While regex and other methods of parsing can solve this trivial problem, anything more complex becomes extremely hard. OpenObserve pipelines allow you to build observability pipelines in most easy and powerful way compared to any other observability platform. It will make your life super easy.

Journald vs Syslog Journald and Syslog are both used for logging in Linux hosts and are both quite popular. Journald is part of systemd and stores logs in binary format, which is very efficient. syslog, on the other hand, uses plain text. Learn the differences in depth in this blog.
