How does changing your space change the way you think? We held an impromptu outreach strategy design sprint in the kids' play area at Café Chica, and the results were pure creativity! Armed with a Crayola crayon and lounging in a pink inflatable chair beneath a neon smiley face, our ideas became more fun, free, and original. Hi folks, Many of you have been reaching out to check on our Western NC team, so here's an official update. The three of us who live in Western North Carolina are all safe, as are our respective families and for that we are so thankful. Communication between the team and partners is getting better each day, but it will still be a while before things get back to any semblance of normal. Ben Owens’ house in Asheville was not damaged (although he had to clear a downed tree in his yard), but it is still without power or water. Wes Davis’ house in Brevard was also undamaged. Unfortunately, Wes’ son’s school, FernLeaf Community Charter School (https://bit.ly/4er1Mo3), sustained significant damage and will be closed indefinitely. We are heartbroken and shocked by the devastation in Asheville and throughout our neighboring communities and region. This is a place of unprecedented beauty that we, and others on our team, have all loved to call home for many years. And while a significant part of our work is in other parts of the country, we still proudly serve and support many school districts around the Western NC region. Our hearts are with everyone impacted. Thank you to everyone for the outpouring of love and messages. You can also donate money or supplies to larger organizations bringing aid to our communities like American Red Cross and World Central Kitchen Kitchen. And while the impact to Open Way Learning is relatively insignificant when compared to other organizations in our region, we have had to cancel several workshops either because of school closures or because travel in this area is still not recommended due to the large number of impassable roads. We have also offered pro bono services to our current regional partners in case that will help them with recovery. With support from the North Carolina Collaborative for Mathematics Learning Visions Project 9-12 Co-design Team, the “Amplifying Voices Podcast Series brings together “NC teachers, teacher leaders, and mathematics education researchers to discuss the realities of supporting students’ engagement in mathematics discourse.” The first few episodes are about setting a vision, creating a welcoming classroom culture, and then dives into different classroom discourse moves.
