A nonprofit that works to leverage existing skill & talent to create a culture of open, authentic innovation in schools.
About us
Open Way Learning is a 501(c)(3) non-profit education organization that champions the following beliefs: 1) Authentic innovation in education comes not from the traditional, inconsistent application of “buzzword strategies,” but when a learning community first attends to the difficult, but necessary development and fostering of a school culture that allows continuous improvement and innovation to thrive. 2) Innovation cultures rooted in the elements of a shared, living vision; collective leadership; systemic collaboration; and the free & open exchange of ideas and resources enable an atmosphere of powerful teaching and learning for all students, especially those furthest from opportunity. 3) The talent and skills needed to grow a culture of innovation already exist in any school or district. But rather than being encumbered by the institutionalized inertia of the status quo, schools can leverage this expertise through the application of “the open source way” (transparency, inclusivity, adaptability, collaboration, and community), thus catalyzing crowdsourced, positive disruption to better prepare students for a rapidly changing world. We advance these beliefs by advocating for more open, equitable, and innovative teaching and learning strategies that have been proven to work through case studies, research, and other applicable evidence from and for public and independent k-12 schools, as articulated in the Open Way Learning website and the book, “Open Up, Education!” These strategies include, but are not limited to Learner-Centered practices such as Project Based Learning, Competency Based Education, Design Thinking, Distributed Leadership, and authentic Personalized Learning. We achieve these goals through targeted support that includes virtual and face-to-face workshops, in-school coaching, public speaking, study visits, blogs & social media, and development of strategic partnerships with other individuals and organizations that share similar goals.

Ready to see how #k12 schools are reimagining #learnercentered environments? As designers of learning experiences, we know the spaces we use shape how students learn and collaborate. As we strive to empower educators and students in learner-centered environments, we're thrilled to share how Cranston Public Schools collaborated with Fielding International to reimagine their learning spaces. As David Thornburg, education futurist and learning space designer, said, "The design of the learning environment is the design of the learning itself." This video series showcases how thoughtful, student-centered spaces can inspire creativity and growth. Check out the full series on YouTube and follow Fielding International for updates on this and other inspiring projects:https://lnkd.in/gNjHxXkz #InnovativeLearning #CollaborationInAction #StudentCenteredSpaces #OpenWayLearning #FieldingInternational #CranstonPublicSchools #21stCenturyLearning

At Open Way Learning, we are always on the lookout for bright spots in education, and today we want to celebrate our partners at the Academy at Middle Fork. Their commitment to creating a sense of belonging and fostering culturally relevant teaching shines through a beautiful project on hojalatas—vibrant tin artworks that reflect a rich artistic tradition found in Mexican folk art, shaping a learning environment where #studentvoice, creativity, and cultural relevance take center stage!

How does changing your space change the way you think? We held an impromptu outreach strategy design sprint in the kids' play area at Café Chica, and the results were pure creativity! Armed with a Crayola crayon and lounging in a pink inflatable chair beneath a neon smiley face, our ideas became more fun, free, and original. The playful environment helped us break out of the usual routine and think in new ways. How does your environment shape your creativity? #strategicplanning #creativecollaboration #designthinking

How might we empower school communities to make equity-driven transformation? The San Diego Education Association is a great example by championing community schools and emphasizing collaborative leadership, policy support, and educator empowerment. As a result, the SDEA is driving transformative change within historically under-resourced communities in the San Diego Unified School District. Hi folks, Many of you have been reaching out to check on our Western NC team, so here's an official update. The three of us who live in Western North Carolina are all safe, as are our respective families and for that we are so thankful. Communication between the team and partners is getting better each day, but it will still be a while before things get back to any semblance of normal. Ben Owens’ house in Asheville was not damaged (although he had to clear a downed tree in his yard), but it is still without power or water. Wes Davis’ house in Brevard was also undamaged. Unfortunately, Wes’ son’s school, FernLeaf Community Charter School (https://bit.ly/4er1Mo3), sustained significant damage and will be closed indefinitely. We are heartbroken and shocked by the devastation in Asheville and throughout our neighboring communities and region. This is a place of unprecedented beauty that we, and others on our team, have all loved to call home for many years. And while a significant part of our work is in other parts of the country, we still proudly serve and support many school districts around the Western NC region. Our hearts are with everyone impacted. Thank you to everyone for the outpouring of love and messages. Many of you have asked how you can help, so if you are able, please reference this comprehensive summary put together by Blue Ridge Public Radio: https://bit.ly/3zAota9. You can also donate money or supplies to larger organizations bringing aid to our communities like American Red Cross and World Central Kitchen Kitchen. And while the impact to Open Way Learning is relatively insignificant when compared to other organizations in our region, we have had to cancel several workshops either because of school closures or because travel in this area is still not recommended due to the large number of impassable roads. We have also offered pro bono services to our current regional partners in case that will help them with recovery. And while it is certainly a lower priority than the above mentioned support, you are welcome to support this and other mission-driven work our nonprofit is known for. Thank you! And stay safe

We’re excited to share that OWL Fellow Margaret Borden (https://bit.ly/4gN5V7h ) is co-hosting a brand new #podcast! With support from the North Carolina Collaborative for Mathematics Learning Visions Project 9-12 Co-design Team, the “Amplifying Voices Podcast Series brings together “NC teachers, teacher leaders, and mathematics education researchers to discuss the realities of supporting students’ engagement in mathematics discourse.” The first few episodes are about setting a vision, creating a welcoming classroom culture, and then dives into different classroom discourse moves. These conversations are between a researcher and a practitioner with expertise on each topic, and they’ve had some awesome conversations thus far!
