Building Futures, Transforming Lives

About us

Our Mission: Operation Fresh Start empowers emerging adults on a path to self-sufficiency through education, mentoring, and employment training. A non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, Operation Fresh Start has provided comprehensive employment and training services to over 9,000 young adults (ages 16-24) in Dane County, Wisconsin since 1970. OFS programs are designed for a critical time in life: the transition to adulthood. They provide a path forward for emerging adults through mentoring, education, and employment training. OFS graduates earn their high school diploma, driver’s license, certifications in the construction and conservation fields, and gain college/career readiness skills. Participants are also giving back to the community -- building affordable homes for low-income families, completing conservation projects and environmental justice work in city and county parks. After program completion, OFS staff continue to support graduates as they transition into post-secondary education and/or self-sustaining employment.

Congratulations and thanks to Dane County Parks for winning the OFS Connie Ferris Bailey Cornerstone Award and investing in the young people in our community. "When we launched Conservation Academy in 2021, Dane County Parks was the first major organization to step up, signing on as our initial contract partner," said Cory Rich, Director of Legacy and Conservation. "Their involvement helped open doors for others to see the potential of our vision, developing pathways into the Conservation and Natural Resource Management workforce for young adults. They've hired several of our program graduates into life-changing jobs." Thank you for your continued support and collaboration!

Congratulations to Ian, OFS Legacy Conservation Supervisor, for winning the OFS Charles Jackson Transformation Award at our annual gala! "Growing up, I had some struggles in school," Ian said. "I had a learning disability called dyslexia, which made school a little bit more difficult for me." Not only did Ian overcome his hurdles as an OFS participant, but he returned to OFS as a crew supervisor in 2023. "I’d like to thank all the staff members who nominated me for this award, and a big shout out to my crew members—they keep me motivated," Ian said. Congrats, Ian, and keep up the good work! Congratulations to Erich, OFS Education and Transitions Manager, for winning the OFS Leadership Award at our annual gala! "This past year, our participants showed an average growth of three grade levels in reading and writing, and 25 credit-deficient juniors graduated within four years," said Executive Director Brian McMahon. "This success can be traced back to Erich's steadfast commitment and vision. He's been pivotal in ensuring our programs meet the diverse needs of our students. Erich's passion for education, dedication to emerging adults, and ability to inspire those around him is contagious." Keep up the good work, Erich! Gala photo credit: Melissa Behling

Congratulations to Breeah for winning the OFS Empowerment Participant of the Year Award at our annual gala! "CareerScape pushed and pulled me in many directions regarding career possibilities but ultimately landed me in healthcare, where I now proudly represent UW Health as a medical assistant. Being with OFS set me up to handle this position, where not only am I the first face my patients see, but I’m often their first real conversation at the clinic. Accepting this award honors my resilience and the will to never give up on myself," Breeah said at the gala. We are so proud of you Breeah. Keep up the good work! Gala photo credit: Melissa Behling

Congratulations to Keenih for winning the OFS Academy Participant of the Year Award at our annual gala! Keenih graduated from the Conservation Academy in April and works at BEE BALM LEARNING CENTER, LLC and the URBAN TREE ALLIANCE after working the summer with Sustain Dane. "Their drive, vision, worth ethic, and moral compass were evident from the very first time I met them," Keenih's supervisor Jake said. "A year ago I could not imagine myself here today accepting this award," Keenih said at the gala. "Being in an environment where I was held accountable and meeting me where I was at, while at the same time being pushed to where I could be, supported me in building discipline, drive, passion, good work ethic, love for community, and capacity as a professional," Keenih said. We are so proud of you Keenih! Gala Photo Credit: Melissa Behling

Lauren recently began her journey with the Neway Directions Certified Nursing Assistant program! After realizing her role as a resident assistant wasn’t sustainable, she connected with Aram, OFS CareerScape Coordinator, who guided her toward training opportunities available through WorkSmart. Additionally, they also worked on her application for a tattooist license and crafted a standout portfolio. We're incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication Lauren has shown! OFS is excited to celebrate the achievements of our participants. If you are 17-24 and are looking for 1-on-1 career counseling, visit https://lnkd.in/dktSJTjQ.

On this wonderful Football Friday we highlight our OFS staff and participants in the WIAA Big 8 Conference. Dennis Wright, OFS Drive Coordinator, is a coach at La Follette High School, and OFS participants Monte (Madison East School) and Sam (Madison West High School) both compete for their respective teams. Last week, Sam got the last laugh as West defeated La Follette 19-17 in a great game! Good luck with the rest of the season, everyone!
